Moon Camp Explorers 2022 – 2023 Project Gallery

In Moon Camp Explorers each team’s mission is to 3D design a complete Moon Camp using Tinkercad. They also have to explain how they will use local resources, protect astronauts from the dangers of space and describe the living and working facilities in their Moon Camp.

1.1 – Project Description

I made a moon base because I really love designing in 3D and using TinkerCAD. The moon base will be used as a checkpoint between the journey from Earth to Mars. It will have many features such as a special place for growing plants, a back-up power generator in case the solar panels get damaged, special vehicles for getting lunar resources and other structures needed for our mission to Mars. The base will be constructed from materials brought from Earth and also ones we can obtain from the moon.

1.2 – Why do your astronaut want to go to the Moon and build a Moon Camp?

I wanted to build this moon base because a lot of people want to find a way to mars. But it is too far from Earth, so building a moon base allows astronauts to use the moon as a temporary stop, and refill the rocket with gas. While the rocket is refilling, the astronauts can go and explore the moon, and can also rest for a while before they go on their flight from the moon to mars. Lastly, a lot of people want to go to the moon, but they can only stay on the moon for a short period of time. Adding a moon base allows astronauts, tourists and other people to all visit and stay on the moon for a much longer time. This is why I wanted to build a moon base.

2.1.a – Where do you want to build your Moon Camp?

Close to the lunar poles

2.2.b – Why did you choose this location?

I want to build the moon base near either the North or the South poles of the moon. This is because there is more water at the poles of the moon and the astronauts will collect it to drink. The moon base also needs to be built in an area that is very flat for two reasons. First, it needs to be flat to build the launchpads. Also, the astronauts need a flat area to lay out their solar panels to get energy from the sun.

2.2 How do you plan to build your Moon Camp? Describe how you can use the Moon’s natural resources, and which materials you would need to bring from Earth.

I plan to build my moon base out of moon rocks because if you melt the moon rocks and mold them into the shape, you could make cement stronger than Earth’s cement. But to make cement on the moon, I need heaters that can melt moon rocks, multiple drills, and molds of different shapes and sizes. Also I don’t want to be flying materials like cement and gravel to the moon because it will cost something like $10,000,000,000,000 in rocket fuel.

3.1 – How does your Moon Camp protect and provide shelter to your astronauts against the Moon’s harsh environment.

My moon base will provide shelter for astronauts by having thick, strong walls and temperature changing machines so it is the perfect temperature for people to survive. The moonbase will have various sensors capable of detecting incoming asteroids. If an asteroid is detected, the astronauts will be alerted by a warning sound, so the astronauts know to go into the concrete living portions of the moon base. The thick concrete walls are important because it will protect the astronauts from collisions. It will also protect astronauts from UV radiation by blocking out the sun’s rays. The moon base doesn’t need to have windows because it will be equipped with indoor lighting.

3.2 – On the Moon, resources are very scarce, but during long Moon missions, astronauts cannot rely on resupply missions from the Earth. Explain how your Moon Camp will provide astronauts with sustainable access to basic needs like water, food, air and power.

Solar panels capture energy from the sun and store it in batteries so when the moon base is turned to the dark side of the moon, the astronauts have energy to use. Also, the astronauts can get energy from when they are on the running machines in the gym. The machines are hooked up to a generator that will convert their running into power. For food, the astronauts will grow plants such as carrots, potatoes, lettuce, tomatoes, oranges and bananas. The plants help us in more than one way. They will be food for us, but they can also filter carbon dioxide and make oxygen for the astronaut to breathe. The astronauts will be able to get water by collecting it from the north or south pole of the moon. To make sure the water is safe to drink, they will filter the water that they get.

4.1 – What would you include in your astronaut training programme, to help prepare the astronauts for a Moon mission?

Our astronauts will not need to learn how to fly the rocket because the rockets will be controlled by computers and fly itself. But they will need to learn how to perform maintenance on the rocket, put on their own spacesuit and what to do during blast off so they don’t get injured. Also the astronauts will be trained to operate the space vehicles and tools safely.
