Moon Camp Explorers 2022 – 2023 Project Gallery

In Moon Camp Explorers each team’s mission is to 3D design a complete Moon Camp using Tinkercad. They also have to explain how they will use local resources, protect astronauts from the dangers of space and describe the living and working facilities in their Moon Camp.

1.1 – Project Description

Translation:

The “Galácticos” project arose when our teacher told us that there was an ESA contest. During the project we learned to design in 3D with the Tinkercad program and our interest in exploring space increased. Some of our designs have been a habitable lunar capsule, a greenhouse, a lunar rover, a rocket ship, a well-equipped laboratory, a gym, and a dormitory.

Algunos de nuestros diseños han sido una cápsula lunar habitable, un invernadero, un vehículo lunar, un cohete, un laboratorio bien equipado, un gimnasio y un dormitorio.

1.2 – Why do your astronaut want to go to the Moon and build a Moon Camp?

Translation:

The astronauts of the “Galactic” project want to go to the Moon because we want to discover the immensity of space and the hidden face of our satellite. It also attracts our attention to carry out experiments on the moon and obtain useful materials for life on Earth.

2.1.a – Where do you want to build your Moon Camp?

Close to the lunar poles

2.2.b – Why did you choose this location?

Translation:

We are going to place our camp at the poles because there are lava tunnels and its temperatures are more pleasant than in the rest of the moon, between -50 degrees to 0 degrees. In addition, a benefit would be the sunlight that would serve to obtain energy.

Nuestro campamento lo vamos a situar en los polos porque hay túneles de lava y sus temperaturas son más agradables que en el resto de la luna, entre -50 grados a 0 grados. Además, un beneficio sería la luz solar que serviría para conseguir energía.

2.2 How do you plan to build your Moon Camp? Describe how you can use the Moon’s natural resources, and which materials you would need to bring from Earth.

Translation:

Our lunar capsule will be made of polyethylene that we will take from Earth because it is a very resistant and light material which will benefit its transport. For the design of parts we will bring a 3D printer and we will use the usable minerals from our satellite.

3.1 – How does your Moon Camp protect and provide shelter to your astronauts against the Moon’s harsh environment.

Translation:

Our lunar capsule will be made of polyethylene because it is a very resistant and light material. This way the meteorites will not fall on the camp and we will avoid solar radiation.

3.2 – On the Moon, resources are very scarce, but during long Moon missions, astronauts cannot rely on resupply missions from the Earth. Explain how your Moon Camp will provide astronauts with sustainable access to basic needs like water, food, air and power.

Translation:

We will bring canned food to survive for a year, animal embryos and in the laboratory we will create the optimal environment for them to grow and provide us with food such as eggs. In addition, we will obtain food and oxygen with a greenhouse and we will obtain water by recycling the purified urine or obtaining the water from the rocks of the Moon.

4.1 – What would you include in your astronaut training programme, to help prepare the astronauts for a Moon mission?

Translation:

Our astronauts are preparing to go to the moon, exercising in low gravity, walking in a spacesuit, diving underwater to hold their breath in an emergency, and doing missions to adapt to gravity.
