Moon Camp Explorers 2022 – 2023 Project Gallery

In Moon Camp Explorers each team’s mission is to 3D design a complete Moon Camp using Tinkercad. They also have to explain how they will use local resources, protect astronauts from the dangers of space and describe the living and working facilities in their Moon Camp.

1.1 – Project Description

We are building our moon base in the philolaus crater in one of the lava tubes to protect from meteors, heat and radiation (along with water in the wall to protect from radiation). We will be building our moon base out of concrete (made by mixing Regolith and water from the moon ice) and graphite. For water we will be using the moon ice which we will mine with carbon fibre tools then we will purify the water and also use the water for a hydro dame which will be one of our ways of getting electricity along with solar panels on the surface. Also, we will recycle all water used. In addition, there will be a back-up generator for the dark season. For air we will separate oxygen for water and we will have lots of algae and there will be an air lock at all the entrances and exits. We will have a heat regulator as the weather is very extreme. We will grow food and use waste as compost. Along with food deliveries.

1.2 – Why do your astronaut want to go to the Moon and build a Moon Camp?

Astronauts will want to go to the moon base for both a science and a pleasure perspective. It will make it a lot easier to get to research facilities and will benefit space exploration for years to come. Along with things such as analysing the other planets for closer and researching beyond our solar system. Also, when we are all set up and more advanced we could invite tourists.

2.1.a – Where do you want to build your Moon Camp?

Philolaus crater on the north east side of the moon in one of the many lava tubes under the surface.

2.2.b – Why did you choose this location?

We have chosen the lava tube in the philolaus crater because there would have to be a lot less excavating to do to create the underground moon base. The temperatures are also a lot less extreme than the other parts of the moon. There is also moon ice on the poles which can be used for water and a hydro dame which would also source us with electricity. in addition, there is extra protection from meteors and radiation underground and the sun always shines on the poles meaning we have a constant way to make energy (solar power).

2.2 How do you plan to build your Moon Camp? Describe how you can use the Moon’s natural resources, and which materials you would need to bring from Earth.

For building the moon base we will use pure moon resources for the main part of it we will use regolith and water to make concrete and graphite mined from the moon for the walls. We will need a bit of food deliveries until we have our own crops and a bit of water until we can mine ice for water. We will also need the materials to make solar panels, hydro dame and back-up generator and all other mechanical things for the moon base.

3.1 – How does your Moon Camp protect and provide shelter to your astronauts against the Moon’s harsh environment.

We have positioned the moon base underground in a dormant lava tube to protect from radiation and meteors. We have also put water in the walls to reflect the radiation back out into the earth. Another safety measure is in the lava tube it will be a bearable temperature were as on the surface it would be way too hot as it can hit almost 150 degrees Celsius and just in case it does get too hot there will be a heat regulator to keep the temperature at the best heat for the human body. The walls will also be metre thick concrete and graphite. There is an air lock to protect from the low amount of oxygen in the moon’s atmosphere.

3.2 – On the Moon, resources are very scarce, but during long Moon missions, astronauts cannot rely on resupply missions from the Earth. Explain how your Moon Camp will provide astronauts with sustainable access to basic needs like water, food, air and power.

For water we are going to make carbon fibre tools to mine the moon ice which is most abundant on the surfaces. We will then melt down that ice into water filter out the regolith and use the water for drinking but also for a hydro dame for electricity. Another option for electricity is solar panels as we are on the moon’s north pole where there is always sun. we will also have a backup generator in case of a dark period. We will grow our own food and also, we will probably need food deliveries. For air we are going to separate oxygen from water and the moons atmosphere.

4.1 – What would you include in your astronaut training programme, to help prepare the astronauts for a Moon mission?

In our training programme we will use things like the Hi-seas space simulator in Hawaii. Another big one is a Sub-orbital Space Flight Training which is a NASA training project to simulate what it’s like to be in the space rocket. And the Sub-orbital Space Flight Training which is a training centre to make you feel like there’s no gravity by submerging you in water. They will also need flight training and space suit training. Along with all these things there is also the smaller things such as becoming an engineer and knowing how to fix all thing in the moon base. You also need to know multiple languages so you can speak to multiple people from different space agency’s from around the world.
