1.1 – Project Description

Translation:

Getting to live on the moon is a challenging project. Beginning by thinking about how the material that would be required to establish a camp on the moon would be carried. The base ¨Killa Wasi¨, in Spanish “House on the moon”, is a camp designed with the aim of making it a new home. It has the capacity to house 4 astronauts prepared to extract resources and investigate more on this satellite. Located in the Amundsen crater, receiving the exact amount of sunlight, Killa Wasi is made up of 12 spaces distributed from the central capsule or Communication Room and connected through tunnels. Entering through the disinfection room (very important since lunar dust can affect our astronauts) the bedrooms, bathrooms, kitchen, gym, recreation room and farms were worked to be spacious and comfortable spaces to live. For example, on the farm there are three crop spaces: cereals, fruits and vegetables. On the other hand, in the rooms: medical, control, maintenance, garage, there is modern and adequate equipment. In the medical room there is a robot for exclusive use, which operates in the event of an accident.

Due to the super saturation of tinkerCAD it was decided to make separate designs to have more detail.

1.2 – Why do your astronaut want to go to the Moon and build a Moon Camp?

Translation:

Passionate about space and the moon in particular, our astronauts want to build a lunar camp with the aim that in the near future human life can expand into space starting with the moon and then to other planets. Being the moon the closest body, it is ideal for exploration. The idea of inhabiting a new planet in the future is due to the fact that terrestrial resources are becoming increasingly scarce and because the idea of inhabiting the Moon as an interplanetary station is feasible, since technology and proximity to Earth help us to transport the necessary resources to generate lunar life within lunar space. On the other hand, since there is neither atmosphere nor gravity, scientific study will allow us to make new discoveries. Finally, on the moon there are different elements and resources that can be exploited.

2.1.a – Where do you want to build your Moon Camp?

South Pole Amundsen Crater

2.2.b – Why did you choose this location?

Translation:

Our camp is located at the south pole, in the lunar crater Amundsen. Where sunlight is constant and very useful for installing solar panels, this phenomenon applies to the lunar poles and not to the equatorial regions. In turn, this crater was chosen because its interior platform is flat, which facilitates the construction of the camp and receives shade during the lunar day, which is suitable for the survival of astronauts. It is worth mentioning that its tops and central peaks receive sunlight and are ideal for the construction of solar panels.

2.2 How do you plan to build your Moon Camp? Describe how you can use the Moon’s natural resources, and which materials you would need to bring from Earth.

Translation:

For the construction it is necessary to bring enough materials from Earth, which would imply several trips, in this sense it is
It will be divided into 3 phases. The first phase will be the construction of the rooms for: maintenance, control, communication, disinfection, recreation and medical; with the help of robots. The second phase will be the construction of the essential places to live such as: bedrooms, bathrooms, gym, dining room and kitchen. Lastly, a farm and hydroponic farming system will be built.
We know that conditions for life on the moon are extreme because it lacks a significant atmosphere to distribute the sun’s heat, so there is little protection against cosmic radiation; For this reason, the walls will be thick and strong to be able to withstand the differences in pressure between the exterior and the interior. For this, the lunar soil offers us a mixture of sulfur with grains of crushed rock similar to cement. To reduce the impact of the lunar temperature, an air conditioning system will be brought from Earth, on the other hand, we will use the water that the moon offers us to be able to carry out a hydroponic agriculture system, to be able to cultivate our plants that will be our main source of feeding.

3.1 – How does your Moon Camp protect and provide shelter to your astronauts against the Moon’s harsh environment.

Translation:

Killa Wasi is a lunar camp which has 12 environments that are protected by a double wall, the external and internal walls will be prefabricated on earth made of aluminum and lithium alloy and in the middle of both walls there will be a filling of lunar regolith that is rich in iron, silicon, calcium and other minerals that are ideal for isolating our astronauts from external radiation. The same system used on the walls will be used for the ceilings, only with the appropriate thickness. The thickness of the walls will also serve as insulation to protect the astronauts from the extreme low temperatures of the moon, as well as the use of an energy-efficient electric heating system that will be powered by solar panels.
The walls will also serve to withstand the pressure differences between the exterior and the interior and will also be useful when micro meteorites that constantly fall on the lunar surface fall. Faced with the low gravity on the moon and the consequences it would have on astronauts, constant exercise will be provided to prevent muscle and bone loss.

3.2 – On the Moon, resources are very scarce, but during long Moon missions, astronauts cannot rely on resupply missions from the Earth. Explain how your Moon Camp will provide astronauts with sustainable access to basic needs like water, food, air and power.

Translation:

Water, food, air and energy can be made sustainable in the following ways: Careful planning and the use of advanced technologies are required. In terms of water, hydroponic harvesting techniques can be used, which allows the cultivation of plants in aqueous solution instead of soil. Greenhouse cultivation technology can also be used. As for the air, oxygen regeneration systems can be used, which convert carbon dioxide into breathable oxygen. Air filtration systems can also be used, which remove carbon dioxide, pollutants and other unwanted gases. For power, solar panels can be used to capture solar energy and batteries to store it. Nuclear power systems can also be used, which provide a constant power source. It is necessary to use advanced technologies to collect and purify water, grow food, regenerate air, and capture energy and water purification, including groundwater capture and lunar ice extraction. Water recycling technology can also be used, which allows the reuse of treated wastewater. For food, hydroponic agriculture can be used.

4.1 – What would you include in your astronaut training programme, to help prepare the astronauts for a Moon mission?

Translation:

A run-of-the-mill gym will be included in our astronaut training program to prevent loss of muscle and bone mass due to different gravity on the Moon. In addition, there will be a gym at the “Killa Wasi” lunar base so that astronauts can maintain a good physical condition with daily training of at least one hour. Equipment for astronauts has been developed that contains heavy material in strategic areas of the body to simulate Earth’s gravity and improve gym workouts.

The astronaut training program will also include psychological preparation to avoid bouts of depression, as astronauts are separated from loved ones for long periods of time. A close relationship will be fostered between the team that will be in the space to help make the stay more bearable.

Another important part of the program is getting used to the food that will be eaten during the mission to avoid possible eating disorders. Finally, the specialized management of all the equipment and instruments that will be used on the Moon will be taught, as well as the management of incidents or unforeseen events that may occur.
