Moon Camp Explorers 2022 – 2023 Project Gallery

In Moon Camp Explorers each team’s mission is to 3D design a complete Moon Camp using Tinkercad. They also have to explain how they will use local resources, protect astronauts from the dangers of space and describe the living and working facilities in their Moon Camp.

1.1 – Project Description

In recent years, space exploration has been gaining attention. A Moon base or camp is designed to support human life and scientific inquiry on the lunar surface. A school project about a Moon camp can provide an excellent opportunity for students to learn about space exploration and develop their creativity and problem-solving skills.

1.2 – Why do your astronaut want to go to the Moon and build a Moon Camp?

Astronaut wants to travel to the Moon. He wants to build a camp on the Moon and explore the Moon and space beyond. Because of the lack of light pollution, he can see other space objects more clearly. He wants to build a new civilization on the Moon.

2.1.a – Where do you want to build your Moon Camp?

Shackleton crater

2.2.b – Why did you choose this location?

Better protection against external phenomena. For instance meteors.

2.2 How do you plan to build your Moon Camp? Describe how you can use the Moon’s natural resources, and which materials you would need to bring from Earth.

We wanted to create a central base in one of the more prominent craters mostly made of glass. It has access to all the smaller rooms. They are all connected by tunnels. The main base is a space for an observatory, for astronauts to check what’s happening around them. Our base consists of a  science lab, an astronomy lab (with all the exceptions needed), a bedroom with a bathroom and a fitness room, a kitchen, a greenhouse using hydroponics, and a chicken panel.

3.1 – How does your Moon Camp protect and provide shelter to your astronauts against the Moon’s harsh environment.

A major problem on the moon is its weather since it doesn’t have an atmosphere. Temperatures at night are so low, you would freeze in about 5 to 10 minutes. The temperatures can drop to -208 degrees Fahrenheit and rise to plus 250 degrees Fahrenheit. We don’t have many solutions for containing a suitable human temperature. During the night we can put multiple mirrors, a heat engine, and heat pipes on the moon every other 30 days for two weeks, and then during the day we could have water pipes that would contain cold water, to cool off the moons/base’s surface.

3.2 – On the Moon, resources are very scarce, but during long Moon missions, astronauts cannot rely on resupply missions from the Earth. Explain how your Moon Camp will provide astronauts with sustainable access to basic needs like water, food, air and power.

We added solar cells around the moon to produce enough electricity for the whole base and so on. Water will be obtained from the lunar soil through regolith hydration. Air will be generated through the electrolysis of water.

4.1 – What would you include in your astronaut training programme, to help prepare the astronauts for a Moon mission?

Astronaut training programs would include mechanical, technical, survival, and laboratory skills.
