Moon Camp Explorers Gallery 2019-2020

In Moon Camp Explorers each team’s mission is to 3D design a complete Moon Camp using Tinkercad. They also have to explain how they will use local resources, protect astronauts from the dangerous of space and describe the living and working facilities.

Project description

Our moon camp has three main parts: The building made from cones and spheres is the living facilities, the transparent dome is the plant room, and to the side, there is an area of solar panels.

The cones of the living facilities are the research labs where astronauts will work. They are above-ground and connected using bridges. Between the three cones, there is a room for batteries that will store solar energy from the area of the solar panels. The spheres of the living facilities contain the bedroom, kitchen, and pool that astronauts will use. Between the three spheres, also underground, there is a living room where astronauts can relax. The transparent dome is the plant room where plants will be grown for food and oxygen. The area of solar panels will provide electricity for the camp.

Where do you want to build your Moon Camp?

Close to the Lunar Poles

Why did you choose this location?

The lunar poles have good temperatures for the astronauts to live. They also have a lot of sunlight for electricity and growing plants and water ice as a local water source. Also, if astronauts live underground near the lunar poles, they can be protected from large meteors.

Astronauts will bring some water with them from Earth. Then, they will use a water recycling system to save as much of it as possible. Meanwhile, they will mine water ice from the lunar poles and refill their supply with it.

In our camp, there is a room made from transparent material, and astronauts will use it to grow plants for food. However, on the lunar poles, there is more sun than needed. So, this room will have blackout material that will block sunlight for the plants to grow well.

An area of solar panels will provide electricity for our camp. The batteries found in the living facilities can store this electricity for astronauts to use in case there is no sun or the solar panels stop working.

The plants that astronauts will grow on the moon will be the main source of oxygen. Astronauts will use regolith or electrolysis for oxygen only when they need to.

How do you plan to build your Moon Camp? Which materials would you use?

Astronauts will use 3D printers and solar soil to build the walls of the moon camp. Also, they will get as many raw materials as they can from Earth, like metal, plastic, and polyethylene. Then, they will 3D print the parts they need and assemble them on the moon.

The Moon environment is very dangerous for the astronauts. Explain how your Moon Camp will protect them.

The buildings on the moon will be made from polyethylene to protect astronauts from small meteors and solar radiation. Also, some parts of the moon camp will be underground to protect astronauts from bigger meteors. During solar flares, the moon camp will have an underground pool for astronauts to protect them from the sun.

Describe a day on the Moon for one of your Moon Camp astronauts

The astronauts will wake up and have breakfast made from plants grown on the moon. Then, they will visit a part of the moon such as the Aitkens Basin or the Cold Traps to collect samples. They can also visit the far side of the moon to study the stars. After, they will have lunch and work in the research labs. In the research labs, they can test new inventions, study the samples they have collected, or even study their skin and body.
Sometimes, astronauts will use the afternoon for repairs and maintenance around the moon camp. They might also take care of and harvest their plants.
In the evening, the astronauts will exercise their bodies and have dinner. Then, they will relax before going to bed and sleeping.
