Moon Camp Explorers Gallery 2019-2020

In Moon Camp Explorers each team’s mission is to 3D design a complete Moon Camp using Tinkercad. They also have to explain how they will use local resources, protect astronauts from the dangerous of space and describe the living and working facilities.

Project description

We wanted to create a village-like camp where astronauts can feel at home. This village camp will be a prototype that we can use in other locations on the moon or even on other planets. Because we want this camp to last into the future, we plan to build more buildings like schools for future generations.
The camp’s layout is inspired by a QR code. Through TinkerCAD, we created a “moon camp” code that formed the base for the distribution of our different buildings.
Once other rockets passing by scan it, they will know that we were the first to build a camp on the moon.
We provided our astronauts with all that they need: workspace, entertainment zone, food, oxygen, and clean water.

Where do you want to build your Moon Camp?

Close to the Lunar Poles

Why did you choose this location?

We chose the lunar poles for several reasons. First, the lunar poles have suitable temperatures for human life. They also have a lot of sunlight for plants and solar energy panels. Finally, there is water ice that astronauts can use as a local water source.

Water
Food
Electricity
Air

Astronauts will get water by mining and melting water ice found on the lunar poles. They will also recycle used water as much as possible to save water and not have to mine for long periods.

Astronauts will grow plants to use for food. These plants can be small organisms like Spirulina or large plants like carrots and potatoes.

On the lunar poles, the sun almost always shines. So, astronauts can use solar energy to provide electricity to the moon camp. Astronauts can also store electricity in batteries and use this stored energy when there is no sun.

Our camp will provide air in three ways: through the electrolysis of water, through heating regolith, and through planting plants.

How do you plan to build your Moon Camp? Which materials would you use?

We will build the main parts and walls of our camp by 3D printing using lunar soil. We will also get raw materials such as plastic and metal from Earth and use them to 3D print the parts that we can not make using lunar soil.

The Moon environment is very dangerous for the astronauts. Explain how your Moon Camp will protect them.

A transparent polyethylene semisphere covers the entire village-like moon camp. This semisphere will protect the people living on the moon from meteors and solar radiation.
There will also be a pool to protect everyone during solar flares.

Describe a day on the Moon for one of your Moon Camp astronauts

There are many ways that astronauts can spend their day on the moon. They can study the planets, stars, and sun from the far side of the moon. They can also analyze the effects of the environment on their bodies by examining skin samples and taking physical exams.
Astronauts should also spend some of their days traveling around the moon and studying different parts of it.
To have fun, astronauts can jump around in low gravity or exercise with really heavy dumbells. They can also talk to their friends and family on Earth.
