Moon Camp Explorers Gallery 2019-2020

In Moon Camp Explorers each team’s mission is to 3D design a complete Moon Camp using Tinkercad. They also have to explain how they will use local resources, protect astronauts from the dangerous of space and describe the living and working facilities.

Project description

We have built a Moon camp that astronauts could live and work in. We have never used Tinkercad before so we started with making basic shapes and got better. We drew what our camp would look like first and then we did different parts on tinkercad and joined them together. Our moon camp will give the astronauts a living and working area in the domes. This is far away from the hydrogen and oxygen so they won’t be hurt if it blows up. There is also an ice mine to get water, solar panels to get electricity and food has to grow food in. They have a nice living area and kitchen so they can relax when they don’t work.

Where do you want to build your Moon Camp?

Close to the Lunar Poles

Why did you choose this location?

There is lots of ice underground at the poles and this is very important. We need to be close to this ice so that we can get water and oxygen so that we can live. There is also a lot of sunlight there so our solar panels will work really well if they are there. It is also important for the astronauts to get lots of sunlight or they will get sad.

We will mine ice out of the Moon’s hidden ice reserves and heat it to water.

We will use Earth soil to grow crops using an automated watering system to speed up production and artificial light to make up for any low light levels.

Power will be provided through solar panels.

Electrolysis can be used to separate the water into oxygen and hydrogen which can be stored in tanks. The oxygen and hydrogen created from the water can also be used as fuel.

How do you plan to build your Moon Camp? Which materials would you use?

We will use the soil on the Moon and robots can 3D print the main parts. The astronauts can go to the base when their living area is built and help the robots finish the rest and set up more difficult bits.

The Moon environment is very dangerous for the astronauts. Explain how your Moon Camp will protect them.

Because the base is built out of Moon soil it will be strong so that it doesn’t get hurt by meteorites and it will block radiation. Each part has an air lock so if one bit gets damaged the astronauts can move to another part and seal off the broken bits.

Describe a day on the Moon for one of your Moon Camp astronauts

The astronauts will have a big clock to help them keep track of time because the days are different on the Moon. They will keep Earth time there and will get up early in the morning to exercise before breakfast together and starting work. They will be vegetarians because we don’t have animals there and it is healthy. They will check the Moon camp is working properly on the computers and tell Earth everything is fine before starting their experiments. One astronaut will look at the robots and make sure they are working. They can get the robots to add bits to the base and make it bigger so more people can join. After the morning experiments they will have lunch together. They will then do more experiments and do the housework. They will have to do more exercise before dinner so that they stay strong and healthy in the Moon’s gravity. After dinner they can call their families on Earth and have some time to play. They might play playstation or go bouncing outside on the Moon. It will then be bed time so that they can sleep and get up early again.
