Moon Camp Explorers Gallery 2019-2020

In Moon Camp Explorers each team’s mission is to 3D design a complete Moon Camp using Tinkercad. They also have to explain how they will use local resources, protect astronauts from the dangerous of space and describe the living and working facilities.

Project description

Our moon camp is designed for long-term human presence on the moon. It is used for various exploration and experiments on the moon, as well as the development of moon resources, and even to support the establishment of a space launch base.

Where do you want to build your Moon Camp?

Close to the Lunar Poles

Why did you choose this location?

Because of the existence of water ice in the pole of the moon, especially the south pole, we set up the moon base near the south pole of the moon to facilitate the access to water, the most important resource for human survival.

Water
Food
Electricity
Air

In some impact craters at the south pole of the moon, there are areas where there is no sunlight permanently. There are water ice in these areas. We will send robots to mine water ice and transport it back to the base. In addition, all water used will enter the circulation system and make full use of it.

We will transport the dehydrated food to the space station through the carrier rocket, and then transfer it to the moon base by the space elevator. In addition, we will plant hydroponic vegetables in the base to provide fresh vegetables for astronauts.

Although there is helium3 in the lunar soil, which can be used as fuel for nuclear fusion, there is no way to make controllable nuclear fusion at present, so we will use the most abundant solar energy on the moon. We will build a large-scale solar “farm” to generate power.

Scientists have found a way to extract oxygen from the lunar soil by using solar energy. We will heat the lunar soil to produce oxygen for astronauts to breathe, and the carbon dioxide produced can also be supplied to hydroponic vegetables.

How do you plan to build your Moon Camp? Which materials would you use?

We will set up a lunar station on the surface of the moon at the first, then we will build a space elevator to transport materials from the earth. Then, we will excavate the underground space to build a permanent command center and living space. We design the underground building into a spiral shape, which is convenient for construction, and compared with the ant colony structure, the space utilization rate is higher. We will use titanium alloy, aluminum alloy, carbon fiber, graphene, aerogels.

The Moon environment is very dangerous for the astronauts. Explain how your Moon Camp will protect them.

The environment on the surface of the moon is very dangerous, the temperature changes greatly, and there is a lot of cosmic radiation and the meteorolites. Therefore, our main lunar base will be built underground, where we can obtain relatively stable temperature. With the water and oxygen resources we get from the moon, astronauts can live on the moon for a long time. In addition, we will use remote-controlled robots for outdoor activities to reduce the time for human astronauts to go out.

Describe a day on the Moon for one of your Moon Camp astronauts
Astronauts will work and rest according to the time of earth day, easy to communication with people on earth. When they wake up in the morning, they will exercise first to ensure adequate physical fitness. After breakfast, start to work, first check whether the automatic oxygen plant and solar farm work normally. Send robots to find new water ice areas. When the materials from the earth to the space station arrive, the astronauts will control the space elevator to climb to the space station position and dock with the space station to transport the materials down.In the afternoon, take care of hydroponic vegetables, go out for exploration, collect samples and return to the laboratory for research, and transmit data to the earth. Talk to the family and go to bed.
