Moon Camp Explorers Gallery 2019-2020

In Moon Camp Explorers each team’s mission is to 3D design a complete Moon Camp using Tinkercad. They also have to explain how they will use local resources, protect astronauts from the dangerous of space and describe the living and working facilities.

Project description

Our project consist on making a base to live on the moon. The base would be situated within and underground the mountain Malapert, close to the Shackleton crater, place where the presence of water has been detected, we also had permanent or semipermanent light so it would be the ideal place for human settlement. We situated  underground for avoid all the dangers that appear if we live in the moon. The part that we situated within the mountain Malapert is the entrance that it’s formed by two modules with double door. 90 On the underground part, we have five modules with deposits of water and oxygen, one for the bedroom, one for the laboratory, one for the kitchen and two for waste

Why did you choose this location?

Because here we can found much water and the edge peaks of Shackleton are exposed to the solar light almost time of the day, but its interior is always dark so it maintains the water freezing.

First, we’ll bring the quantity necessary to survive one day at the moon, because if we want to use the electrolysis, we’ll need dirty water. And then when we have the necessary dirty water we start to use the electrolysis.

Our astronauts Will obtain their food thanks of the fast growing plants that we’re going to grow there. To have 12 hours of light and 12 of darkness we’ll cover the cupola when its day and when its night we’ll use a light to give heat at the days of night, they also have to bring some food complements.As long as our plants grow they will have to be nourish, so they will have to take food of astronauts.

There is light we could obtain solar energy with the solar panels, then we remove surplus to keep it until the night comes. But this isn’t enough, because of that we’ll add a system of mirrors very sophisticated and a thermal engine. The mirrors are spotlight Fresnel, like some solar power plants in the Earth, and they contract it on a tube of liquid. The heat evaporate the liquid on gas, at the same time, heat up the thermal mass. Then, during a long night, the heat is transferred in a engine Stirling to produce electricity

How do you plan to build your Moon Camp? Which materials would you use?

When the astronauts arrive to the moon with the materials they starts to build the entry of the base, it will be underground, so they will have to dig the Moon’s surface, in order to build the base inside of the Moon. First a great whole which is led by 6 different paths, each is one of the modules.

The Moon environment is very dangerous for the astronauts. Explain how your Moon Camp will protect them.

We’re going to use regolith in order to protect our lunar base for meteor. Also, we are gonna use a special protection because of the moon dust that can contamínate our air, so we are going to have lots of door so the moon dust can’t enter.

Describe a day on the Moon for one of your Moon Camp astronauts

When the astronauts arrive to the moon they only have to live their lifes but with some changes.

First the astronaut wake up, then he goes to the kitchen to have breakfast. When he finishes, he goes to the laboratory and investigate substances that their partners discover. Then, If they need water,he takes the rover to bring some lunar ice. Then he comes again to the base and he takes off his astronaut suit and he begins to breath the air that the electrolysis is providing him. It is time to eat so he goes to the bathroom to do his necessities and then he has dinner. When he finishes, he goes to the bed for have energy for the next day.
