Moon Camp Explorers Gallery 2019-2020

In Moon Camp Explorers each team’s mission is to 3D design a complete Moon Camp using Tinkercad. They also have to explain how they will use local resources, protect astronauts from the dangerous of space and describe the living and working facilities.

Project description

We decide to build our Moon Camp on the lunar poles surface, which will allow an efficient sunlight use.

Our camp consists of dorms, a cafeteria, a gym, a nursery, a greenhouse, a telephone station, a landing zone and a place to clean water called ETAS.

Our camp allows 25 people to live on it, which should have jobs that fulfil camp’s needs. Scientists, farmers, engineers or physicians are priority.

Regarding temperature, we will build a pipe system that distributes greenhouse heat produced by the entire camp infrastructure. The greenhouse will also serve as an air cleaner.

One of the things to explore while there is Moon’s atmosphere.

Where do you want to build your Moon Camp?

Close to the Lunar Poles

Why did you choose this location?

We chose this location because its temperature is similar to the ones we experience on Earth. Besides, lunar poles have 80% of light during the day, enough light for us to produce energy, thus powering our camp. This location will allow us to use the sunlight in a really efficient way, reducing power related costs.

Water
Food
Electricity
Air

Some water will come from Earth, some will come from the Moon itself. We did some research and found out that the Moon has water in solid state, although in low quantities. One possibility is to mine it. We will also build an ETAS (Estação de Tratamento de Águas Sujas) where all the water mined and used in the camp will be cleaned. The aim is for it to be reused.

Our camp has a cafeteria where people can eat. Moon inhabitants will only be allowed to eat three times a day, specific quantities. Every meal will come from Earth and will be mainly space food. We will also build a greenhouse. In it we plan to grow some food in the long term.

Our camp will be solar energy powered, through solar panels installed outside the building. Sadly we cannot store it indefinitely, so we will develop a battery able to store the necessary to fulfil the camp’s requirements. As Moon has no atmosphere, there will be no clouds, and the days will be always sunny. We only need to ensure we have energy to power the camp during the darkest hours.

We will bring bottled compressed air from Earth to use in our camps. Besides, the greenhouse will not only provide food but also oxygen. There will be a pipe system to distribute the heat produced on it around the entire camp infrastructure. This way, we can recycle some of the air breathed. In the long term, the aim is to develop kind of an atmosphere.

How do you plan to build your Moon Camp? Which materials would you use?

We will use mainly Moon building materials as we find very expensive, and technically difficult, to bring them from Earth. In addition, the Moon soil is already adapted to the Moon characteristics. The greenhouse will be built with glass with a hardened protective layer against meteorites. This material is going to be projected on Earth and sent further to the Moon.

The Moon environment is very dangerous for the astronauts. Explain how your Moon Camp will protect them.

To protect our camp from dangerous radiations and meteorites and to monitor temperature, we will develop an artificial atmosphere similar to the Earth’s. Also, the camp’s entry will comprise a transparent tunnel with two automated doors that will open and close to ensure air doesn’t get out the camp while the inhabitants go in and out the structure.

Describe a day on the Moon for one of your Moon Camp astronauts

This morning, we woke up at 6 am and we took breakfast in the cafeteria which came from our greenhouse. Back to the dorms, we took a bath and made our bed. After we called our parents, we went to the laboratory to do some research. We communicate our findings with our collegues working on Earth. During lunch time, in cafeteria, we ate space food. After, we went to the laboratory again. At the end of the day, we went to the gym where we did some specific exercises. We did a check up in the nursery and took a nap just before dinner. At dinner, we ate a steak with boiled potatoes and a soup. As dinner ended, we did a brainstorm where we discuss what to do in the next day. At 10 pm we went to bed.
