Moon Camp Explorers Gallery 2019-2020

In Moon Camp Explorers each team’s mission is to 3D design a complete Moon Camp using Tinkercad. They also have to explain how they will use local resources, protect astronauts from the dangerous of space and describe the living and working facilities.

Project description

We will have a central base of operations in the middle of the dome. Behind it we are going to have an hospital (the green and white building). Below the central base, we will have the main structure where you can find the dorms, the kitchen, toillets and so on. We thought in build both underground and on the surface to be able to explore the Moon easily: we can use sunligh to power us and at the same time the lunar tube walls to protect us from it.

Where do you want to build your Moon Camp?

Close to the Lunar Poles

Why did you choose this location?

Lava Tubes have good temperatures that allow plants to grow, our principal food source. This giant caves are natural shelters against cosmic radiation, meteorites impacts and extreme temperatures. Besides, Lunar Lava Tubes can be big enought to shelter entire cities and even to allow roads between them.

Water
Food
Electricity
Air

We are going to bring water in solid state from Earth to the Moon. We will monitor de use of water and clean it after we use it. We will have a station where it is going to be stored and filtered.

Our food will come mainly from the greenhouse.

Our main power source will be solar energy.

We will have a system that will produce air and induce a renewed air flow through the entire camp. This system will be first designed on Earth and 3D printed on the Moon.

How do you plan to build your Moon Camp? Which materials would you use?

We will use the cave’s walls as the camp’s walls. We will first build the air system and then introduce all the other structures. We will use regolith, metal, and glass. We aim to build mainly with Moon resourses. We are going to focus on exploring them while there.

We will also have a dome to make the transition between the Moon and the camp’s atmosphere.

The Moon environment is very dangerous for the astronauts. Explain how your Moon Camp will protect them.

Building inside lunar lava tubes is perfect as we are naturally protected against cosmic radiation, meteorites impacts and extreme temperatures. The temperature inside lava tubes is low, so we are going to project an heating system.

Describe a day on the Moon for one of your Moon Camp astronauts

A day has passed since we landed, we put our bags down in the dorms. We started exploring the moon until we discovered some craters, as it was already late we went to our colony. We asked our cook to prepare dinner, but something unexpected happened and we had to go to the greenhouse.

After some time everything calmed down and we finally went to dinner, dinner was very good and then we went to our room.

Late in the afternoon we went to the dorms, but before we had a meeting that took at least an hour where we talked about what we discovered and explored, at the end of the meeting we went to sleep.

It is like this in our routine in the colony.
