Moon Camp Explorers Gallery 2019-2020

In Moon Camp Explorers each team’s mission is to 3D design a complete Moon Camp using Tinkercad. They also have to explain how they will use local resources, protect astronauts from the dangerous of space and describe the living and working facilities.

Project description

Our moon camp is divided into two parts: the above-ground part and the underground part. There are four facilities of the above-ground part: 1. greenhouse 2. nuclear power station 3. solar power station 4. moon rover. The underground section also has four facilities: 1. bedroom 2. oxygen lab 3. equipment lab 4. dining room.

Where do you want to build your Moon Camp?

Close to the Lunar Poles

Why did you choose this location?

We are going to build our moon camp close to the moon’s polar regions, At this region, temperatures range from -50-0, which is ideal for astronauts to live and plants to grow. And there is plenty of water ice in the lunar polar region, that could be helpful for humans survive.

Water
Food
Electricity
Air

Heat the lunar soil to 1000℃ and use ilmenite (FeTiO3) from the lunar soil and hydrogen from earth to form water. There are also water transport machines to transport water from the earth.

We are going to use the plants which was grown on the base to provide food for the astronauts, and it was equipped with transporters to transport food.

Power station 2:nuclear power station: the equipment are: 1. Nuclear island 2. Conventional island 3. Auxiliary facilities of the power station.
(There are shields on the outside of the power station to prevent celestial impact.)

1. The lunar soil is made up of metal oxides. By focusing the sun’s rays with a convex mirror, we heated the lunar soil to 2500℃, then let electric current pass through the molten material to create a chemical reaction that decomposes the lunar soil into oxygen and metal.
2. There are considerable reserves of water ice at the poles of the moon.We use electrolytic water reaction to get oxygen and hydrogen, which is used for the camp people to survive, and hydrogen can be used as fuel.

How do you plan to build your Moon Camp? Which materials would you use?

We are going to build the moon camp with construction robots, use lunar soil to build a shell to protect the moon camp, which will save material transportation and speed up the construction of the moon camp. Our material will use compressed lunar soil to make it stronger.

The Moon environment is very dangerous for the astronauts. Explain how your Moon Camp will protect them.

We will build a hard shell to protect the moon camp, the shell including three layers, the first and third layers are made of polyethylene, and the middle layer is made of lunar soil, which can protect against radiation and meteorites.

Describe a day on the Moon for one of your Moon Camp astronauts

One day at the moon camp:

08:00 get up,wash and fitness

10:00 physical examination, equipment inspection and maintenance

12:00 lunch

14:00 Sample collection

16:00 experiment

18:00 dinner

20:00 entertainment, reading

22:00 shower and sleep
