Moon Camp Explorers Gallery 2019-2020
In Moon Camp Explorers each team’s mission is to 3D design a complete Moon Camp using Tinkercad. They also have to explain how they will use local resources, protect astronauts from the dangerous of space and describe the living and working facilities.

Project description
The reason we built this camp is so that astronauts can live on the moon for one year without problems. Our moon camp is created for four people to stay. The things the astronauts will do on the moon is study and research about the moon, astrology, and other things. Lots of tools in the labs will help the astronauts research. The camp will be built in a lava tube at the poles. This is because at the poles, the temperatures are moderate and warm, and there is always sun. The functional buildings in our camp would be the bathroom, the lab, the bedroom, and the kitchen and dining room. Other functional rooms would be the greenhouse, the gym, the computer room (to store information and communicate with earth), a swimming pool (for radiation safety), and an office/workspace. We will bring a 3D printer machine. |

Where do you want to build your Moon Camp?
Close to the Lunar Poles Why did you choose this location?
We chose this location because on the lunar poles, the sun is always shining, and that will benefit us for we can have more solar electricity and our plants will always be able to flourish in the sun. We want to build our camp in a lava tube because in the lava tube, the temperatures are nice and even, with sun at the top. Because the moon lacks an atmosphere and can be very cold at times, we want to build our camp in a lava tube so that the astronauts can stay warm. The poles also have a rather moderate temperature, so building the camp there will also help. |

We will use a heated drill to break the ice and melt it so that we will have water to drink. We will also recycle |
For food, we will get food from our greenhouse. The plants in the greenhouse will be able to get sunlight all |
To get power in our moon camp, we will have solar panels. Because our camp is at the poles, the sun is |
To get oxygen on the moon, we will use regolith, electrolysis, algae to produce oxygen for our camp. We will get the oxygen from |
How do you plan to build your Moon Camp? Which materials would you use?
To build our moon camp, we will 3D print it. We will bring a robot which on one end has a scoop to collect regolith, in the Center a container for the printing material, and at the other end there is a robotic arm with a printing head. For radiation safety, and to block out meteorites, the outer layer of our camp will be made of a l ayer of 20cm thick polyethylene. |

The Moon environment is very dangerous for the astronauts. Explain how your Moon Camp will protect them.
Our moon camp will protect the astronauts through providing enough oxygen, air, food, and electricity to survive. Because the main building is underground and we have a thick layer of polyethylene as a radiation shield, our astronauts will be safe from radiation and meteorites. In our camp, the temperatures are moderate because of the location, so that the astronauts will not freeze nor be burned. Our camp includes all of the necessary things the astronauts needs to survive on the moon. |

Describe a day on the Moon for one of your Moon Camp astronauts
For our astronauts, the day starts with pulling the shutter up so that the plants will be able to get sunlight after 8 hours in the darkness. The astronauts will turn on the sprinklers to water the plants. Next, they will cook breakfast in the kitchen and eat in the dining room. During the day, the astronauts will workout in the gym, experiment and explore in the lab, eat, drink, use the bathroom, and have a normal day. In the afternoon they will go to the swimming pool to have more radiation safety. Every few days they will make new oxygen and water supplies in their lab. At nighttime, they will again go visit the plants and pull the shutter down so that they won’t be in the sun anymore. |
