THE STARLIGHT GROUP by THE STARLIGHT GROUP
IES CERVANTES MADRID-MADRID Spain 14 years old 6 / 6 English Moon
Project description
On the surface we have included six solar panels and a water tank where a machine makes water by artificially provoking it through a special interaction of hydrogen and oxygen molecules. This water goes through a series of processes and filters before becoming usable and drinkable. Communication would be possible thanks to satellites and complex machines that would be installed on the moon. The objective is to find out more things about the moon and the crater the base would be located in is not enough to go as far as we would like to so we included a tunnel that can guide astronauts, rovers or other vehicles outside the crater.
When it comes to where the astronauts would live, we wanted it to be as comfortable as possible. This base is thought so that five astronauts can live there. The most important thing if we want to discover as much as possible about the moon is that the astronauts feel as if they were home. Communications between the families and friends of the astronaut would also be plausible. All these facilities may seem unnecessary to some but we have to take into account that people will be spending years there and it is a very difficult experience.
When you go through the depressurization room at the entrance you have to go through some stairs to reach the underground base. There is an entry hall that leads to all the different rooms.
Firstly it is important to grow our own food, the stock is limited and, although our plan is that after certain periods of time food is restocked,it is important to have a varied diet. In the trip apart from the food being restocked, the newest technology is installed, and trash is removed. We would grow food for our own consumption and for some hens and fish. The hens would be useful so that they lay eggs and to eat. There would also be a fish tank with some fish to eat. There would be a room dedicated to crops and breed hens and animals.
The principal room is the entry hall from which you can enter into all the rooms. It is a simple room you can enter through several stairs and it only contains a sofa and a shelf to leave things such as the astronaut’s helmets.
Exiting the room mentioned before, we can access the kitchen and dining room as well as a space dedicated to organic waste to fertilize our garden. This leads to the bathroom. The bathroom is also connected through a hall which also leads to a shower and the garden.
The entry hall is also connected to the kitchen which is further connected to the garden. In the kitchen we can find five chairs, a table, a washing machine, a sink and a stove. In this room we store the food brought from the Earth and the garden.
Due to the small amount of gravity on the moon (1,62 m/s2), muscle loss is common that is why it is important for us to include a gym. There we can find a treadmill with special technology such as ropes that simulate the Earth’s gravity. A desk is also included and other gym materials such as weights.
For waste storage we have a whole room which has five different trash cans to recycle (blue: paper, green: glass, red: e-waste, yellow: plastic and gray for other residues). The waste would be collected once in a while.
Other rooms are: a bedroom (five beds) and a walk-in closet (for space suits and the astronaut’s clothes).
The office is a big and useful room. It contains five chairs, five desks with computers and headphones. Here we can find the necessary technology to control the whole base and communicate with the Earth.
