Project description
Armony is a hexapod rover designed for cave exploration and other celestial bodies with tough environments. It is mostly equipped with the newest technology available. Some of the most important features are: a self-healing mechanism, ensuring reliability during the deployment stage regardless of the orientation of the lander. Additionally, it has a smart adhesion mechanism to stick to the lunar surface, among other groundbreaking purposes. All of these features are powered by AI and machine learning software.
As mentioned, Armony can be deployed regardless of the lander’s orientation. We focused on this aspect of the design in Armony due to the unfortunate recent events during landing. The Armony deployment ensures reliability in the most challenging landings, conserving a significant part of the mission’s payload and the Rover itself.
Besides, Armony is also a power saver. Due to the way it moves, once it reaches the right angle in its leg joints, it takes a jump retracting the rest of the legs for better control and maneuvering. Upon landing, the shock absorbers reduce the impact, taking advantage of the low gravity of the Moon and saving a lot of energy.
Additionally, Armony carries a very interesting experiment in its belly, the M.S.M. or Microwave Separation Method. This experiment would allow Armony to extract purified water from lunar soil via microwave heating for further study.
On the other hand, Armony, a hybrid between a hexapod and a wheeled rover, with the purpose of covering larger distances. Complementing this mode, the six-legged rover would be capable of jumping obstacles or small craters instead of circumventing them.
And the best part, Armony is customizable for the user’s needs. It can be a telemetry antenna, a water extractor, a miner, or even a small and portable lab, making it a multifunctional tool for scientific research and technological development during space exploration.
