Project description
Project Description
Title: A Museum of Ancient Greek Theater on the Moon
Participants: 5th Gymnasium of Corfu Greece: 3 teachers (a philologist, a biologist, and a computer scientist) & 15 pupils.
Objectives: The “Ancient Greek Theater” was established in Athens during the classical period (480-323 B.C.). It was associated with democracy. Its character was not exclusively entertaining but also religious, political, social, and didactic.
Visitors will be able to have a tour of the Museum. Following that, they will attend an ancient Greek theatrical act.
Advisory institutions:
- Museology Research Lab, Ionian University: An Associated Professor of Museology explained to the pupils what a museum is, pointing out how this museum can make visitors more sensitive about saving human culture, material or immaterial.
- Astronomical Society of Corfu Greece: A scientist gave a lecture on the conditions prevailing on planets of our solar system.
Working teams
- “Planet selection”
- “Drawing base”
- “3D base design”
- “Selection and documentation οf museum objects”
Location selection
Pupils studied the characteristics of several planets, especially Mars, Venus, and the Moon. The South Pole of the Moon was finally selected because:
- … the conditions on the surface of the Moon are inhospitable to humans (+130oC during the day, -173oC at night, harmful solar and cosmic radiation). However, studies of lunar soil cavities show ideal living conditions (temperatures at 17oC and an environment protected from space radiation).
- … the “Artemis Program”, which is led by the United States NASA, considers the south pole of the Moon as an ideal place for lunar landing and installation.
- …the distance between the Moon – Earth (380,000 km) is “small” compared to the distance between Earth and other planets.
- …the European Space Agency (ESA) has expressed its intention to explore the caves that exist on the Moon.
Design tool
We chose Tinkercad as our design tool. The Tinkercad platform is user-friendly, enhances teamwork, and enables sharing of projects.
Key components of the Base – Museum
- The lunar base is located inside a small crater in order to ensure protection for people from radiation, radioactivity, and the factors that can harm their health.
- The living quarters and the storage area were placed at the base of the central vertical structure.
- One level above is the Museum and the “Ancient Greek Theater”. The collections of the museum consist of an ancient Greek amphora, a statue of the ancient Greek tragedian Euripides, an ancient Greek theater mask, an actor’s costume, and a model of an ancient Greek theater. The objects will be created through a 3D printer. An information display digital screen will give extra information. At the same level, a small ancient Greek theater will offer theatrical acts.
- At the top of the structure there is “the arrival and departure platform”.
- An elevator helps staff and museum visitors to move.
- A huge dome protects the structure.
- Solar panels and a communication structure support the base.
