Project description
Our team is named the Mars Journey Exploration Team. Our camp is designed to be located on Mars, a mysterious planet which is potentially become humanity’s second home. The main use our camp is to provide a living and scientific research facility for astronauts and researchers on Mars, ensuring their basic needs and safety. Our camp is located in a crater near the south polar cap.The camp is mainly divided into five areas: living area, scientific research area, nuclear power plant, agricultural area, garbage disposal area.In addition, there are return rockets, transport vehicles, ice shovel, signal tower. The regions are relatively independent and connected by roads. The scientific research area is used to provied a scientific research site for researchers to conduct research on the distribution of water resources, geological activities, energy development and utilization of Mars, explore the use of Mars energy and resources to establish a self-sufficient lifestyle; The living area includes residential area, medical area, fitness and entertainment area, storage area, providing a place for rest and entertainment for scientific researchers; In the agricultural area, plants and crops are selected and planted through vertical agriculture and soil culture and hydroponics, and crop varieties adapted to the Martian environment are cultivated through genetic engineering to provide fresh food and nutrition supplies for astronauts and researchers. The nuclear power plant provides electricity and heat for the operation of the camp, and the signal tower is used to communicate with Earth. Since Mars has strong radiation, we chose silica aerogels to build radiation barrier on the surface of Mars. This porous material can isolate harmful ultraviolet radiation without interfering with the photosynthesis of plants and slow down the heat transfer, helping to maintain the temperature of the internal space. The living area shell is designed as a sandwich, which is filled with silica aerogels to prevent radiation. In consideration of the less gravity in Mars and can not use stairs and traditional elevator, we choose to use a magnetic levitation elevator, through the current control the direction and speed of the elevator movement. In addition, due to the scarcity of directly usable water resources on Mars, we use ice shovels and transport vehicles to obtain solid ice from the polar cap of Mars, heat the ice to melt it, and treat it to obtain liquid water. The living and scientific waste on Mars will be treated in the garbage disposal area, while the wastewater will be treated as water, and the treated water resources can be reused in the agricultural area. Our camp can provide comfortable living environment and convenient scientific research conditions for astronauts and scientific researchers, ensure the supply of energy and resources, and protect the lives of the occupants. If this Mars trip can establish a self-sufficient lifestyle using energy and resources on Mars in our camp, then Mars may very well become humanity’s second home.
