To prepare for the next big city by Mars Vanguard

Project description

Concept of the overall structure of the base

The base is located on the (Tempe Mensa) Cliff, which is rich in water resources on Mars. The steep terrain of the cliff provides an opportunity to create a vertical city in the rocks, protecting the city from radiation and meteorites, while also receiving indirect sunlight exposure. The entire base is embedded in the mountains and adopts a modular and scalable design to cope with constantly changing needs and future expansion. The main cabin and cultivation cabin are exposed at the top, which can be directly exposed to sunlight. The living circle is exposed to the south of the cliff, ensuring natural lighting. The oxygen production chamber and water circulation treatment system are built inside the mountain, and there are simulated sunflower solar panels on the mountaintop to ensure power supply.

Innovation points

  1. Using a plasma reactor to produce oxygen, accelerating a beam of electrons to a specific energy level, decomposing carbon dioxide into its constituent ions, and producing oxygen.
  2. Integrating biotechnology with the base, utilizing modified fungi to produce oxygen, collect and purify water, and improve Martian soil. The improved soil can be used to grow crops
  3. Using materials produced from mycelium as building interlayers, mycelium is the root of dead fungi that can be processed into bricks. It has the characteristics of compression resistance, earthquake resistance, thermal insulation, flame retardancy, environmental protection, easy production, and convenient use

Basic knowledge of Martian environment

The average surface temperature on Mars is about -55 ° C, with a range of -153 ° C to 20 ° C. The atmosphere is mainly composed of carbon dioxide, with extremely low pressure, strong radiation, and frequent sandstorms. Faced with the extreme environment of Mars, the base will ensure the safety and living needs of residents by establishing a strong water circulation system, radiation protection measures, and a self-sufficient agricultural production system.

Looking ahead to the future

Development Plan: The preliminary plan for the base is to conduct Mars exploration and scientific research experiments. The next step will be to prepare for Martian migration and provide basic materials for building large cities
