营地的选址位于火星上的赫拉斯盆地。此处有较丰富的资源、较适宜的气候环境以及较稳定的地质条件。人类将乘坐高超速宇宙飞船前往目的地。
营地建设风格以冷色调为主,贯彻简约高效的理念。外观科幻有美感,功能全面而实用。火星条件恶劣,人类的第一要务是生命能够存续,因此必须要讲究效率。
营地配备有丰富的基础设施,所能实现的功能多样。能够保证各种资源的稳定供给、加工工业原材料产出工业制品、处理废弃物并循环利用、提供居住和科研场所。其有地上地下两个部分,功能不同的各区块能够在人工智能的统筹下有条不紊地完成任务。
营地面对的首要难题是保证人类所需要的各种资源的稳定供给。首先是水资源,营地所在的赫拉斯盆地附近有大量的冰层,营地配备有专门用于开采水冰的设备,同时能够进行污水处理。其次是食物的补给,营地中有专门进行无土栽培和水培农作物的场所,科研人员也在尝试培育出更加优良的品种。然后是电力能源的来源,通过次生流体发电这种方式来开发地热能,并建造有风力发电机和太阳能电池板等设施作为辅助。最后是氧气的保障,营地中有对水进行光解等化学反应制取氧气的区域,工作人员也穿戴着专门的服装器具以确保体征稳定。
