Project description

The idea for the base is that there is a base at the North Pole of Mars (near the Chasma Boreale), on the edge of the polar ice caps so that water samples and soil samples can be collected, the Chasma Boreale can be observed more closely, and to avoid having to deal with building complications of the erg (sandy desert) which surrounds the ice cap in all directions. The structures of the interconnected buildings are geodesic domes (to better hold pressure). The base will be equipped with equipment for electrolysis (to separate O2 from water), soil and water analysis, EVAs, and geological excavation. The base will be powered by solar panels when the pole is in sunlight and CO2 generators (if the technology researched by the University of Queensland, detailed in this article is further developed) when the base is in darkness. There will be two types of buildings in the base: one for dormitories/recreation, and one as a devoted science lab, connected through above-ground tunnels running between them. Both will have airlocks and EVA suits. There will also be a drill so that water can be mined from the ice cap for drinking and electrolysis among other uses.  Another hypothesis is having a laser constantly melting ice, which then flows to the buildings in dedicated pipes, generating electricity in turbines as it moves.
