Project description
Our project aims at establishing a lunar base around 2035 to extend astronauts’ stays on the Moon, facilitate scientific research and possibly serve as a rallying point between Mars and Earth. The base, located in a fault in Shackleton Crater, will allow experiments on the lunar environment, food cultivation and the effects of low gravity.
Built with a 3D printer and regolith, and based in a Shackleton crater fault, it will offer protection against cosmic dangers.
Astronauts’ basic needs will be met by water harvesting and purification, freeze-drying of food and cultivation in Biomboxes, as well as solar panels and other energy sources. Waste will be recycled, and communication with Earth will be maintained by satellite and a dish on Malapert Mountain.
Research will focus on topics such as the South Pole-Aitken Basin, geology, biology and technology. An astronaut training program will focus on physical fitness and mental health, while space vehicles, including rockets, will be used to transport equipment and crew to the Moon.
The base will take the shape of a half moon, these different compartments will be in a rounded shape so that the walls do not break because of the pressure differences between the inside and the outside. Most of the building will be located in the gap, only the observation tower will be visible from the outside. There will also be a hangar not far from the base and each entrance will be equiped with airlocks.
