In our project we take advantage of water and material resources present in the E-ring of Saturn and the asteroids in the asteroid belt to design a self-sustaining settlement for people to live in given the challenges Earth is facing recently such as overpopulation and resources depletion. Our project outlines the methods that we can use to utilize those resources and keep the atmosphere in the settlement as close to that ob Earth as possible. We made a design of our settlement which consists of two rings connected with a central tube with the rings orbiting independently at a certain rate to produce artificial gravity. We explained how to extract materials such as water and metals by optical mining and then use this water in oxygen production by electrolysis and the materials in manufacturing. As for power supply of the settlement, we found fusion-fission reactor to be the most promising method and for moving the settlement VASIMR and NTRs were proposed. we prioritized inhabitants’ health so we discussed the nutrients that should be provided and also designed a special Agricultural system which depends on Aquaponics , hydroponic and animals to provide those nutrients. Furthermore, we considered the completely new environment that the inhabitants will be living in so we put entertainment facilities that combine advanced technology and simple meaningful activities such as Visual Reality , arts and sports..etc which help boost the colonists mood and mental health while also securing a future healthy society.
