Moon Camp Pioneers 2022 – 2023 Project Gallery

In Moon Camp Pioneers, each team’s mission is to 3D design a complete Moon Camp using the software of their choice. They also have to explain how they will use local resources, protect astronauts from the dangers of space and describe the living and working facilities in their Moon Camp.

1.1 – Project Description

My plan for Moon camp was to send the compartments to the moon by rocket, and because that was the most feasible and the least expensive way to do it, our compartments were all cylinders. The overall shape is a cross shape, one is a symbol of God and good Gospel symbol, two is because the moon often occurs moon earthquakes, the cross structure is relatively stable. The theme of our camp is scientific, and it can accommodate four to six people for a long period of time.(128)

1.2 – Why do you want to build a Moon Camp? Explain the main purpose of your Moon Camp (for example scientific, commercial and/or touristic purposes).

The main purpose of our moon camp is science. For human beings, landing on the moon has not yet been realized, so scientific research and exploration on the moon should be the first step. However, tourism and commercial camp plans are far from the present, and many science and technology need to be known in the future, lacking theoretical support. So our moon camp program is about science.(68)

2.1 – Where do you want to build your Moon Camp? Explain your choice.

Our camp is planned for the South Pole of the moon, the Aitken Basin. According to related reports, there is a large amount of permafrost in the shadow regions of lunar craters. Moreover, the “annual proportion” of light energy in the basin is very large, which can reach 80% to 80%, and a large amount of solar energy can be obtained through light to provide energy for the base.(96)

2.2 – How do you plan to build your Moon Camp? Consider how you can utilise the Moon’s natural resources, and which materials you would need to bring from Earth. Describe the techniques, materials and your design choices.

Our lunar camp consisted mainly of rocketing the compartments from Earth to the moon, where they were assembled by mechanical vehicles. The technology we use is mainly rocket recovery technology. By landing the rocket smoothly on the moon, the capsule was automatically placed on the lunar surface. Our cabin is clad mainly in titanium metal and covered with gold paper to protect against cosmic rays.(109)

2.3 – How does your Moon Camp protect and provide shelter to your astronauts against the Moon’s harsh environment?

To protect the crew from radiation, we put the crew quarters underground, and in addition to that, we used radiation proof gold paper in the construction of the cabin. In order to prevent the moon quake from causing greater damage to the base, we use the shape of the cross structure to prevent the base from deformation.(88)

3.1 – How will your Moon Camp provide astronauts with sustainable access to basic needs like water, food, air and power?

Water resources, one is generated by hydrogen and oxygen fuel cells. The second is to use reflected light to melt and filter the ice in the shadow area to produce water. And the third is the circulatory system that gets water from the water vapor in the various compartments and the human remains through technical means. Food, first, is provided by growing vegetables and raising some small insects in the plant barn inside the base. The second is through resupply via rockets from Earth. Air is controlled, primarily by means of circulation devices, to maintain the most livable levels of gases in the camps. The other is to store energy through electrolysis of water. When oxygen is insufficient, the oxygen produced by point hydrolysis will be released to supplement oxygen. Carbon dioxide produced by human respiration will be transported to Zhongzhi bin through the circulatory system, providing suitable gas environment for vegetable growth.(153)

3.2 – How will your Moon Camp deal with the waste produced by the astronauts on the Moon?

The exhaled carbon dioxide, water vapor, and ammonia will be absorbed by the circulation system and distributed to the necessary compartments. The carbon dioxide generated by humans will be transported to the breeding barn, and the oxygen generated by the breeding barn will be transported to the main compartment. The astronaut’s excrement will be processed into fertilizer for plants through a recycling system, such as drying. Food bags will be collected and degraded by bacteria.(75)

3.3 – How will your Moon Camp maintain communications with Earth and other Moon bases?

There is a satellite pot on the lunar rover at the base, and the communication equipment at the base sends signals to the satellite pot in space, which is then transmitted to the Earth through the satellite. To maintain contact between lunar campsites and Earth.(45)

4.1 – What scientific topic(s) would be the focus of the research in your Moon Camp? Explain which experiments you plan to do on the Moon (for example in the topics of geology, low gravity environment, biology, technology, robotics, astronomy etc.).

In our moon, the research topic is the exploration and utilization of lunar resources, as well as plant development and aquaculture under low gravity. Our team plans to conduct deep lunar exploration experiments on the moon. Since 1969, Apollo has made six consecutive lunar landings and retrieved over 380 kilograms of samples for detailed ground research. He has gained a comprehensive and in-depth understanding of the chemical and mineral composition of the lunar surface soil and rocks, volcanic and magmatic activities, impact cratering and fracture systems, internal structures and evolution, laying the foundation for the development of lunar geology. By the end of the 20th century, lunar geology had already formed as an important discipline. Exploring the moon is to understand its practical value, as it has extremely rich mineral resources. For example, there are much more uranium and thorium minerals used for atomic power generation than on Earth; There are also extremely rich rare earth and titanium ores in the form of ilmenite. In China, there are some of these minerals in the Panzhihua area of Sichuan, which led to the establishment of Pangang. On the moon, the distribution area of this ore is approximately the size of China, and the grade is also very good. There are also many other mineral resources.(214)

5.1 – What would you include in your astronaut training programme, to help prepare the astronauts for a Moon mission?

I believe that the training content for lunar astronauts should include physical fitness training, aerospace environment adaptation training, psychological training, basic theoretical training, aerospace professional technical training, flight program and task simulation training, survival and lifesaving training, and large-scale joint exercises.(41)

5.2 – What space vehicles will your future Moon mission need? Describe the vehicles found in your Moon camp and consider how you will travel to and from Earth, and explore new destinations on the Moon’s surface.

Future lunar landings require multiple large launch vehicles and transport ships, as well as unmanned vehicles and robots. The transportation for the lunar camp includes a lunar rover, with a drill and shovel at the front end of the mining vehicle that can be used for mining. There is a camera at the front end of the transport vehicle that can serve as the eyes of astronauts, and astronauts can know the outside situation without leaving the base. You can travel from the moon to Earth or from Earth to the moon by spaceship transporting supplies.(96)
