Moon Camp Pioneers 2022 – 2023 Project Gallery

In Moon Camp Pioneers, each team’s mission is to 3D design a complete Moon Camp using the software of their choice. They also have to explain how they will use local resources, protect astronauts from the dangers of space and describe the living and working facilities in their Moon Camp.

1.1 – Project Description

Our Moon camp is built for tourism purposes, with museums, 3D bumper cars, moon camping and lunar history museums as the main attractions. In terms of transportation, we use special capsule trains to shuttle visitors through the buildings of the camp. And we will use unique science and biotechnology to bring tourists a safe playing environment, such as meteorite protection devices, rapid first aid facilities and so on. We use meteorite protection devices to protect the building and visitors while also converting the impact into electricity.

1.2 – Why do you want to build a Moon Camp? Explain the main purpose of your Moon Camp (for example scientific, commercial and/or touristic purposes).

The moon camp was set up for tourism purposes. As the process of human exploration of the universe continues to accelerate, human spiritual entertainment is also essential. The unique amusement facilities on the moon can make people more deeply experience the mystery of the moon, and then stimulate people’s interest in the exploration of the moon and the vast universe.

2.1 – Where do you want to build your Moon Camp? Explain your choice.

We plan to build a camp in the South Pole, one is because parts of the South Pole are protected from sunlight, and there may be a lot of water ice stored there to keep everyone on the camp hydrated. The second reason is because of the light. The Antarctic has the phenomenon of perpetual daylight, which will appear continuously for more than 180 days, which is conducive to research.

2.2 – How do you plan to build your Moon Camp? Consider how you can utilise the Moon’s natural resources, and which materials you would need to bring from Earth. Describe the techniques, materials and your design choices.

By collecting lunar soil, feeding it into a water-making apparatus, water and metal materials are produced and then metal mirrors are used to melt the soil and evaporate most of the elements, leaving behind iron and titanium. The alloy with good performance was obtained by further mixing. In addition, simple metal cutting and processing technology were carried out to further treat the alloy as the basic building materials of the camp.

2.3 – How does your Moon Camp protect and provide shelter to your astronauts against the Moon’s harsh environment?

The building surface adopts multi-level, multi-functional and multi-material skin. The thermal insulation layer and protective layer can effectively ensure the safety of the base and maintain the normal conditions of temperature and air pressure inside the base. At the same time, the ecological cycle device is adopted inside the base, which uses biological regeneration to produce oxygen, food, recycling waste and so on.

3.1 – How will your Moon Camp provide astronauts with sustainable access to basic needs like water, food, air and power?

Water:The main source of water is underground exploration, and large amounts of water are produced by hydrogen reduction of oxygen-containing minerals or by collecting human body fluids.

Food:We built a growing area with fruits and vegetables to keep the food safe, and we also used synthetic meat to power the astronauts.

Power:Solar and nuclear power are used to keep the base powered. When the sun shines, solar power is the main power supply, vice versa, nuclear power is the main power supply. At the same time, our meteorite protection device can also convert the impact of meteorites into electricity.

Air:Collect the sandy soil on the surface of the moon, screen out oxygen-containing minerals, and use hydrogen to reduce the oxygen-containing minerals to produce water and further electrolyze the water to produce oxygen. At the same time, oxygen can be collected from the ecological area to ensure the oxygen supply in the base.

3.2 – How will your Moon Camp deal with the waste produced by the astronauts on the Moon?

The waste generated by astronauts is mainly recyclable waste, which can be reused through material recycling. As for some non-recyclable waste, it can be broken down by setting up underground piggy banks.

3.3 – How will your Moon Camp maintain communications with Earth and other Moon bases?

Our lunar base will have radar and signal stations that can transmit and receive signals via wireless networks, and astronauts will be able to share information by using electronic devices such as cell phones.

4.1 – What scientific topic(s) would be the focus of the research in your Moon Camp? Explain which experiments you plan to do on the Moon (for example in the topics of geology, low gravity environment, biology, technology, robotics, astronomy etc.).

At our lunar base, safety is our number one concern. To protect astronauts from meteorites and radiation, we plan to build an external defense system. And to do that, we need to develop a super-transparent material that can withstand meteorite impacts and cosmic radiation while remaining transparent.

This challenge is a very difficult task for materials science. However, we believe we can create such a material with high strength, toughness and transparency by using the moon’s unique elements and materials. This will provide an important layer of protection for our defense system and ensure the safety of our astronauts.

In the experiment, we will utilize advanced material manufacturing techniques and improve the properties of materials by studying their structures and properties. We will use advanced laboratory equipment to test the durability and radiation resistance of the materials. We will also investigate how to produce this material in the lunar environment and explore uses for the material, including making building materials, equipment and tools for lunar bases.

We believe this research will have a significant impact on future space exploration and base building, and lay the foundation for our ability to establish a long-term presence on the moon.

5.1 – What would you include in your astronaut training programme, to help prepare the astronauts for a Moon mission?

1 .Physical Training: Astronauts need to do a range of physical training, such as running, weight lifting and aerobics.

2 .Simulate the space environment: In order to adapt to the space environment, astronauts need to undergo special training in the pool to simulate weightlessness. In addition, they need to train in a high-pressure oxygen environment.

3. Vehicle piloting: Astronauts need to learn how to operate the vehicle and conduct simulated piloting missions to ensure they can safely navigate in space.

4.Mission training: Astronauts train for a variety of tasks, including spacewalking, maintenance, and scientific research. The training needs to take place in a simulated space environment to ensure that astronauts can adapt to the challenges and limitations of the space environment as they carry out their missions.

5. Teamwork: Astronauts must work closely with other astronauts and ground controllers in space, so teamwork training is also important.

5.2 – What space vehicles will your future Moon mission need? Describe the vehicles found in your Moon camp and consider how you will travel to and from Earth, and explore new destinations on the Moon’s surface.

My future mission to the moon will require a spacecraft that will be a space-hopping hub that will take astronauts to the moon in a fraction of the time. The main means of transportation for our moon camp are floating capsule tubes, as well as lunar buggies and so on.
