Moon Camp Pioneers Gallery 2019-2020

In Moon Camp Pioneers each team’s mission is to 3D design a complete Moon Camp using Fusion 360. They also have to explain how they will use local resources, protect astronauts from the dangerous of space and describe the living and working facilities.

Describe your Moon Camp project.

Our Moon Camp project is an idea how we can live on the moon, and explore it on the same time. Under the projects time we have learn much about the moon, and what there is there have gave us various ideas how we can use the things and materials that’s already there. For exempel we get stuck with the lava tunnels, because inside them the moon’s surface protects the base from the sun’s radiation and asteroids. Which does so we don’t need so much material from the earth, and instead use the materials from the moon to the construction inside the base. With the water from the moon, food from the greenhouse, power from the solar panels, air and rocket fuel from water electrolysis and the training with machine controlled weights, I think your Moon Camp can work.

Where do you want to build your Moon Camp?

We want to build the moon base on one of the poles, because of the weather there is better than it is on the other places on the moon. The temperature is more even there and can only vary between -50° and 0°C. To be protected from asteroids we want to build the base under the moon’s surface, in one of the moon’s lava tunnels. One more thing which is good with that build the base inside a lava tunnel is that the moon’s surface protects us from a part of the sun’s radiation. Which otherwise should take the death of us under only one year.

How do you plan to build your Moon Camp? Describe the techniques and materials you would use.

First up we plan to 3d print the outer walls of the moonbase with polygon plastic and some other light airtight material from earth. Later when the moonbase is secure and the habitants have started gathering/mining materials, we plan to expand the moonbase with the materials that were/is gathered/mined from the lunar surface. We plan to build the base in a lava tunnel, because it doesn’t need so much material from earth, since it’s only the opening as must protects from asteroids and radiation. This means lighter rockets, less fuel consumption and that makes it cheaper to set up the moonbase.

Water
Food
Electricity
Air

We are going to primarily use the water on the moon, that we can find in the craters on the poles. But in the beginning we are going to transport some water from the earth. And by reuse the water by filtering it, we don’t need to take so much from the moon. Which does so the astronauts can explore the moon’s water sources.

We plan to grow plants and other crops for animals or other critters in a greenhouse, and we can use the oxygen that the plants produce which
means we get both food and oxygen. We plan to have the greenhouse in an own sphere at the moon’s surface, to give it proper sunshine.

To get power in the space we think a good way is with solar panels, because in space does not exist some summer/winter, night/day and clouds that covers the sun. And the fact that the moon doesn’t have any atmosphere that stop the radiation, which does that we can extract more power.

To get air we think the water electrolysis is good to use. It is a chemical reaction where you let electrical power go through water, and that makes oxygen and hydrogen. There we can use the oxygen to breathe and the hydrogen as rocket fuel. It’s a good method because we only need water, that there is on the moon, and electrical power, that we extract from the solar panels. And it’s effective when we get out booth air to breathe and rocket fuel to the rockets.

How do you plan to build your Moon Camp? Which materials would you use?

The environment on the Moon is very dangerous for the astronauts. Explain how your Moon Camp will protect them.

For the first we had think to build the moonbase inside a lava tunnel, because the moon’s surface protects us from booth asteroids and the sun’s radiation there. And by using polygon plastic, that can stand against the radiation, at the opening so it will protect the base from radiation, so no radiation can come inside. And to protect the opening from asteroids we going to use some metallic as a of skeleton frames under the plastic.

Describe a day on the Moon for your Moon Camp astronaut crew.

The day for the astronauts on the moon begins like a usual day waking up and eating breakfast, which they get from the greenhouse and the critters that we might have there too. After that they going to work, which means the explore that we want to do in the space from moon. Then it’s time for lunch and after that we think it’s important with some training and some spare time for hobbies and such things. But the biggest difference is that it is on the moon which means to the gravity is different and all things weight much less. So for example the training equipment is mechanical instead of using regular weights, and you must be strapped to it so you don’t fly around. And the food is going to be more healthy because we won’t have a pizzeria or a hamburger joint there until it is secure enough so bacteria and other stuff won’t infect the food. The spare time is just regular freetime so they can do something other than work all the time like playing games. And lastly it’s time for the bed and bed accessories. To not fly around when they sleep there is a type of capsule they can sleep inside.
