Moon Camp Pioneers Gallery 2019-2020

In Moon Camp Pioneers each team’s mission is to 3D design a complete Moon Camp using Fusion 360. They also have to explain how they will use local resources, protect astronauts from the dangerous of space and describe the living and working facilities.

Describe your Moon Camp project.

Our Moon camp is made up of 7 different structures, used for specific functions. The astronauts’ home is a two-story building, with everything necessary for living inside. This building is connected by corridors, with hermetic doors (so as not to release oxygen), to other structures: the greenhouse for crops, a swimming pool to protect astronauts from solar radiation and a laboratory for experiments, connected to a warehouse where the production of water and oxygen takes place. There are also two outdoor garage: one for the rover and the other for the energy reserve and waste disposal. Finally there are solar panels, located at the poles, for the operation of the entire field.

Where do you want to build your Moon Camp?

Between the pole and the equator because it’s sunny but not too much. We can build our camp both below and above the surface, but in any case the solar panels and the greenhouse must be above the surface.

How do you plan to build your Moon Camp? Describe the techniques and materials you would use.

As soon as the astronauts arrive on the moon they will begin to collect the lunar terrain to build the various buildings (polyethylene panels are sent from the earth to the greenhouse). But polyethylene has numerous contraindications: the first is the duration, which in the absence of special treatments is less than one year. The second is the strong permeability to thermal waves; in other words, it does not retain heat. Finally, it is not perfectly transparent and therefore limits the sunlight that reaches the underlying crops. Therefore it is necessary to find a material for the greenhouse resistant to meteorites and radiation, like Ethyl acetate vinyl (Eva), although it is very expensive. The waste produced is pressed and used to coat the buildings.

Air

The reserve of water sent from the earth will have to be recycled, moreover we will try to extract the water from the lunar surface thanks to special tools.

When astronauts arrive on the moon, food will consist of freeze-dried sachets from the earth. Then when the crops grow they will be the main food.

Power is guaranteed by solar panels located at the poles, always sunny places, so they will supply energy continuously. Then the electricity will be stored in the fuel cells, located in one of the two garages.

The air will be guaranteed throughout the structure thanks to a pipe system. The pipes start from the greenhouse, which produces oxygen and spread it throughout the structure.

How do you plan to build your Moon Camp? Which materials would you use?

The environment on the Moon is very dangerous for the astronauts. Explain how your Moon Camp will protect them.

Astronauts will be protected from buildings, with polyethylene cover; also to protect themselves from solar radiation they can dive into the pool and have some fun.

Describe a day on the Moon for your Moon Camp astronaut crew.

We wake up and have breakfast. Then two of us go to take with the rover the power supplied by the panels at the poles while the other two take care of the greenhouse and crops. After lunch we do an hour or two of exercise daily to keep fit, then we relax and swim in the pool. Later we carry out other tasks necessary for the proper functioning of the field such as the maintenance of the rover or of the various buildings and the disposal of the waste produced during the day or the exploration of the lunar soil and the consequent experiments. In the evening we connect thanks to an antenna or satellite dish with the earth for the report of the day or the assignment of new missions. Later, after talking a little, we go to sleep, aware that tomorrow will be a wonderful day on the moon.
