Moon Camp Pioneers Gallery 2019-2020

In Moon Camp Pioneers each team’s mission is to 3D design a complete Moon Camp using Fusion 360. They also have to explain how they will use local resources, protect astronauts from the dangerous of space and describe the living and working facilities.

Describe your Moon Camp project.

The main objective of this project is to discover how the moon works, and how is it interior and be able to know how it works. A dome is going to be created, and an underground base, where the astronauts will live, it will be able to have 6 astronauts living at the same time for as many years as the base is able to operate, it is known that the astronauts can not live for long periods of time so the crew will change in shorts periods of time. The base is going to be built it in the south pole, and as close to the center of the pole as possible, to be able to use both sides of the moon to produce energy.

Where do you want to build your Moon Camp?

We are going to build our base underground, as we can protect ourselves from the gamma radiation that comes from the Sun and in the pole, to be as close as we can to both sides, to provide our base permanently with solar energy.

How do you plan to build your Moon Camp? Describe the techniques and materials you would use.

The best materials to use are stainless steel and iron; these materials are resistant and good isolatings, and reducing the waste of energy will be possible Overground: Methacrylate that let the light come in, it is a material that let the light go through it allowing us to have plants in the upper part, producing O2 Underground, iron and stainless steel; are going to be used as recoveries to aisle our base and provide a normal life conditions like the one in the Earth. To build it, first thing is to take the land off making a circle underground, and then with the same techniques that Airbus used to connect the fuselage of the A380, connecting the parts between them.

Air

As the plants will be permanently illuminated, they are going to get the CO2 that we produce when we breathe and transform it to 02, with that 02, we are going to breathe, and use it to burn CH4 getting H20 and CO2 we will clean that water, and get the CO2 to the plants and continue the cycle providing us always.

Different plants will be used, which are going to be illuminated all day and will produce all they can. There will be: carrots, lettuce, tomatoes and more types of vegetables and fruits. These ones are going to be controlled every 3 hours. We are going to use space meals for the proteins and the vitamins that plants can not give us, for example, a plant can not give us the same proteins as meat.

Solar panels will be used. One group (group A) is going to be situated a sunny place and the other (group B) is going to be situated in the place where there is not light. This is a cycle, when group A is not light, group B is illuminated.
These solar panels will have a control program that will advise if anything happens to them or if they present any failure.

For air, plants. In the daylight, they are using the CO2, producing oxygen. In the periods when there is not light, energy will be used to dissociate the CO2 that the plants are producing. These plants are going to be illuminated every single time. For this, we are going to use a special type of lamp: it will be red and blue colour lamp and it will be a LED.

How do you plan to build your Moon Camp? Which materials would you use?

The environment on the Moon is very dangerous for the astronauts. Explain how your Moon Camp will protect them.

To do

Describe a day on the Moon for your Moon Camp astronaut crew.

The astronauts will get up at 5, then, they will go and see how plants are. They are going to check if everything it’s all right.
To organize shifts will be used, this way nobody is going to be more exhausted than anyone. Group 1 is going to have 3 people. They do the night shift, looking if everything is alright and in a good way. Technology is going to help so much because it is going to tell them if something is not working it the right way.
Group 2 is going to have 3 people too. They do the day shift, growing plants and looking for the ones that are ready to collect. They will also do the machines check and look for more information of the Moon and the water of it. They will also check how many time is left to change the light of the groups of solar panels.
There is going to be experiments of how their bodies are going to react to that amount of days inside a closed place. Plants will react too because their are going to be exposed to a situation they have never been before. This is going to help them to know more about humans and plants.
