Moon Camp Pioneers Gallery 2019-2020

In Moon Camp Pioneers each team’s mission is to 3D design a complete Moon Camp using Fusion 360. They also have to explain how they will use local resources, protect astronauts from the dangerous of space and describe the living and working facilities.

Describe your Moon Camp project.

This Moon base will provide scientific knowledge of composition of Moon´s surface it will also investigate usage of isotope Helium-3. It could also serve as first step to permanent settlement on Moon and as interchange station for Mars. The walls of the base are 3m tall (without roof). The base is divided into six sections – Laboratory, Crew quarters, Garage, Hydroponic farm, Reactor room and Machine room. Crew quarters is divided into three sections – Sleeping quarters, Kitchen and Toilet. For visual purposes are roofs in project made of  glass in reality roofs will be made of concrete. Roof will have two layers and in between will be regolith this will prevent bigger asteroids from dealing heavy damage.

Where do you want to build your Moon Camp?

Base will be build in crater Lilius. Construction site will be foot of the crater’s rim. This location will be partly shielded from solar radiation by being on south pole and crater’s rim. In this location will hopefuly contain water in form of ice. Crater of Lilius have worn down and rounded outer rim in northwest this will be good route from the crater for expeditions. Crater is big enough for future expansion.

How do you plan to build your Moon Camp? Describe the techniques and materials you would use.

Moon regolith will be baked into concrete like substance which will be used to build walls, roof and basics of base. This will be done by automated robots which will get blueprints and orders from Earth. Robots will be delivered first in order to build the infrastructure, examine surrounding and search for water. Base itself will be underground by making artificial hill on top of the base. Furniture and base parts will be delivered by using rockets. Solar panels will be build by assembling parts.

Water
Food
Electricity
Air

Crew will mine ice from veins under the ground. Ice will be liquified and filtered from all impurities. Polluted water from toilets and humidity from ventilation will be also filtered and reused.

Crew will grow undemanding plants in hydroponic farm by using processed waste from toilets and artificial fertilizers. Sunlight will be provided by UV lamps. Crew will aslo get regular packages from Earth and will always have at least two weeks worth of rations.

Base will utilize solar power and batteries. Nuclear reactor will be used as back up, it will be manually started by pulling out borite rods which prevent fission of nuclear material. This will be done only in emergencies endangering lives of astronauts. Elektricity will be conserved as much as posible. Solar panels generate twice the amount of power needed to run the base in case of failure of some solar panels.

Oxygen will be generated by electrolysis. Water will be split into oxygen and hydrogen. Oxygen will be distributed by ventilation and regulated by sensors in each room which will analyze concentration of oxygen and carbon dioxide. Hydrogen can be used as rocket fuel or stored. Carbon dioxide will be filtered by regenerative carbon dioxide removal system witch is used on shuttles. Base will also have emergency rebreathers.

How do you plan to build your Moon Camp? Which materials would you use?

The environment on the Moon is very dangerous for the astronauts. Explain how your Moon Camp will protect them.

Astronauts in base will be protected by thick layer of concrete and regolith. Crew will be shielded from radiation by layer of lead and pipes with water. All water system is placed in ceiling to protect crew from radiation. Suits will have standart protective gear and special double layer which is filled with adhesive that can close holes.

Describe a day on the Moon for your Moon Camp astronaut crew.

Astronauts have private rooms in which they have notebook and drawer with clothes. They start their day by having breakfast in kitchen which is located opposite crew quarters. They eat grown plants and rations with recycled water. Then they have recreation time in which they can watch TV or relax. They also carry out mining missions. Crew will collect samples from surface and underground of the Moon. At noon they eat lunch in form of rations such as canned meat etc. They also eat some green plant as side dish. After lunch they do activities such as examination of samples etc. Then they work out on a treadmill and do push-ups. In the afternoon they go on a survey by rover. They come back in the evening and take care of the plants. After that they have a free time to relax and have a dinner.
