Moon Camp Pioneers Gallery 2019-2020

In Moon Camp Pioneers each team’s mission is to 3D design a complete Moon Camp using Fusion 360. They also have to explain how they will use local resources, protect astronauts from the dangerous of space and describe the living and working facilities.

Describe your Moon Camp project.

Our lunar camp is located at one end of the lunar south pole, it is composed of 4 domes for the use of astronauts, a storage area for food grown by hydroponics, 8 large solar cells to obtain solar energy, a landing area for subsequent expeditions and two small nuclear reactors where plutonium 238 will be used as secondary energy.

Where do you want to build your Moon Camp?

We will build the lunar camp near the south pole where the Lunar prospector space probe crashed, specifically at the South Pole-Aitken basin as extensive accumulations of underground ice have been found and this will help astronauts stock up on water. Similarly, this area has almost constant exposure to sunlight and this will solve the energy recharge. Volcanic earth can be used for construction, this will help us protect astronauts from solar radiation and meteorite strikes.

How do you plan to build your Moon Camp? Describe the techniques and materials you would use.

We plan to build the moon camp with lunar earth, to create a natural refuge against asteroids, radiation, and the dangers that may exist in outer space. Construction robots will be used to speed up times and avoid accidents, to drill and use the moon rock, the excavation blades will be used. The place where we seek to build the camp, is full of materials such as volcanic stone and minerals such as Pyroxene or Olivino, within them we find radioactive materials, which will also bring materials such as plutonium 238, this will serve to build a small nuclear reactor, which will help astronauts obtain a type of secondary energy apart from solar energy.

The area that we choose for the construction of the lunar camp provides us with underground ice accumulations and that will be our main source, with this, we will not only use the existing water sources on earth, but the ice that is in the poles will be harvested. Digging blades will be used to drill through the lunar soil to obtain the liquid water.

To obtain food, we will grow our food in hydroponic greenhouses since no substrates will be needed to harvest and we will use the water obtained from the collection with the drills, we will harvest highly nutritious plants such as Waldmann’s green lettuce, amaranth, and foods that contain all the nutrients needed to survive.

The main source of energy will be solar energy since that part of the lunar sky is always exposed to sunlight, this will provide us with enough energy for the vital energy system and the electronic devices that will be used in the lunar camp. Similarly, it is proposed to use plutonium 238 to create electricity through thermocouples, to supply solar energy and to take advantage of it in a more optimal way.

To obtain breathable air, it is planned to use the same system of the international space station, the so-called Oxygen Generation System, which consists of a machine that through chemical processes converts water that is no longer useful using electrolysis into oxygen. Where they are separated into Oxygen (O2) and Hydrogen (H2). Subsequently, oxygen is released into the atmosphere to be breathed in by astronauts, and hydrogen, which is harmful to humans, is used in another reaction where water and methane are created together with carbon dioxide.

The environment on the Moon is very dangerous for the astronauts. Explain how your Moon Camp will protect them.

The atmosphere of the moon is very thin and dim, this means that the rays and radiation emitted by the sun cannot be controlled and come to affect astronauts directly, so the housing area will be built with lunar earth to that solar radiation does not reach the skin of astronauts. In the same way, the areas of cultivation, research, and where the astronauts will work will have an aluminum and Teflon coating since these materials do not allow radiation to pass through them. Lastly, meteorites will not be able to destroy the volcanic-reinforced top of the base, so astronauts will be safe inside.

Describe a day on the Moon for your Moon Camp astronaut crew.

First, one of the astronauts would check the hydroponic crops and harvest the food to be eaten that day while the other does a routine check of the camp, checks the nuclear reactor, air oxygen levels, and ground base communications. Later the rest of the day will be devoted to the investigations that are being carried out at that time. From time to time they will leave the camp to repair any damage or to carry out scientific experiments. Inside the rest area, there is a small group of machines that astronauts can use to exercise. Finally, even though there is no day and night on the moon, astronauts must sleep a minimum of 8 hours to stay in shape and not lose physical condition.
