Moon Camp Pioneers Gallery 2019-2020

In Moon Camp Pioneers each team’s mission is to 3D design a complete Moon Camp using Fusion 360. They also have to explain how they will use local resources, protect astronauts from the dangerous of space and describe the living and working facilities.

Describe your Moon Camp project.

Our project consists of a base built in a crater on the Lunar South pole, because it is a place where we can obtain constant light and water, in order to support the right functioning of the base.
Some structures of the base will be outside, like the solar panel area, the water pump, the entrance to the shelter and the mirror system that will provide sun rays to the greenhouse. However, the underground part will be smaller and will provide only the essential resources to ensure the right conditions for living there.
The materials used to build the base will come from the Moon: regolith (used to build the main structure, employing a 3D printer), water and solar power. However, once in a while the base will need some supplies from the Earth. This base can accommodate up to 5 astronauts.

Where do you want to build your Moon Camp?

Our Moon Camp will be located in the hollow of a crater on the Lunar South pole, because it is a place with constant illumination, therefore it provides a potential energy source to the Moon base. Moreover, many studies affirm that lunar poles have subterranean ice water, so, if the base is built there, the Moon can provide water source required to maintain live there.
The base will be located in the slope of the crater, some meters under the level of the surface, in order to avoid solar radiation and to provide extra protection against meteorites.
Part of the shelter will be overground, like the greenhouse (because it needs to be in contact with the Sun), the mirror system, the solar panels, the water pump and the entrance to the base. However, the lunar house is underground.

How do you plan to build your Moon Camp? Describe the techniques and materials you would use.

Firstly, some robots and a 3D printer will begin the construction of the greenhouse, the lunar house and the water pump.
Meanwhile, astronauts will be in the lunar module with which they have landed on the Moon. They will be building the system of mirrors, which is the fundamental feature of the base, because thanks to it, we can build a base where there is no direct light (since the base will be placed inside the crater) avoiding solar radiation because the mirrors only direct the necessary light to the base.
Until the base is built, the astronauts will be living from the consumption of resources (water and food) predestined for this moment of the operation. The astronauts will be responsible for establishing the solar panels that give energy to the base, and when the base is built, will plant in the greenhouse everything necessary to thrive on the Moon.

The base will be placed on the Lunar South pole, where there is frozen water. Therefore, we will draw the water from inside the Moon, using a hot drill that allows frozen water to melt enough to be able to collect it in a tank, which is connected to a pump that will provide water to the base and the greenhouse.

The food will come from the greenhouse. The astronauts will use an aeroponic system, that requires less space to grow the plants, because they will be planted vertically, and divided by different floors. This system requires less resources than other traditional methods, and with the mirror’s system, astronauts have the control of the temperature and the brightness that the greenhouse needs. However, it’s very difficult to make a completely independent Moon base, because astronauts need certain nutrients that the greenhouse can’t give them. So, from time to time, the Earth will provide these resources.

The main energy source of the base will be solar energy, which is captured with a series of solar panels that are on the surface of the crater. These panels will capture constant light, except on some occasions where there may be eclipses. For these cases, there will be batteries that have been previously charged with solar energy that can be used.

Oxygen will be obtained in the same way as in the International Space Station: from recycled water. Using the electrolysis method, H2O will be separated into O2 (that will be used to breathe) and H2.

How do you plan to build your Moon Camp? Which materials would you use?

[54]

The environment on the Moon is very dangerous for the astronauts. Explain how your Moon Camp will protect them.

First of all, regolith is a material that protects the base very effectively.
In addition, the base is not directly on the lunar surface: it will be at the beginning of the slope of the crater, so it will be semi-hidden, and as a consequence, the sunlight won’t enter the base (which protects against radiation) and reduce the possibility of attacks from meteorites or other objects.
However, just in case something doesn’t go as planned and the astronauts need time to fix whichever problem that may arise, the lunar house will be connected to a small storage room full of useful resources, and there will be a system of communication with the Earth.

Describe a day on the Moon for your Moon Camp astronaut crew.

First of all, astronauts have to wake up. They will sleep in bunk beds to minimize the space of the Moon base.
Then, they have to have a good breakfast, because they need a lot of energy to carry out all the tasks they have to perform during the day. The base will have a common place where astronauts can eat and socialize.
After that, there are lots of things that astronauts can do:
• One of the main tasks that they have to do is taking care of the greenhouse that provides food for the astronauts. They also have to keep an eye on the system of mirrors, because they have to direct light to specific places of the greenhouse.
• The base will also have a laboratory, that astronauts will use it for studying samples collected from the expeditions around the Moon’s surface, and also for other experiments that can be run on the Moon.
• In order to carry out expeditions on the Moon’s surface, astronauts can use the special vehicles (rovers) that the base has.
The gym routine is very necessary for everyone because it will help to stay healthy. Astronauts must train at least 2 hours a day, taking into account that the living conditions on the Moon are quite different to those on the Earth, so astronauts have to get used to doing sport every day.
