Moon Camp Pioneers Gallery 2019-2020

In Moon Camp Pioneers each team’s mission is to 3D design a complete Moon Camp using Fusion 360. They also have to explain how they will use local resources, protect astronauts from the dangerous of space and describe the living and working facilities.

Describe your Moon Camp project.

This project has as a main objective to create a shelter / lunar base and the conditions necessary for the survival of two or more astronauts on the moon where they can live and do their investigations. Using local resources and a 3D printer we will create a “dome”, where they can be installed. We intend to develop a small farm so that these astronauts can produce their own food  taking advantage of advances in nanotechnology in the field of agriculture, where nanofertilizers will be used (increases the income from agricultural production and make it more environmentally friendly, promotes greater efficiency avoiding loss of nutrients, in addition to prevent premature conversion to chemical forms that cannot be absorbed) and carbon nanotubes (penetrate the outermost layer more hardness of the seeds, increasing the water absorption capacity, which explains the stimulus of plant growth).

Where do you want to build your Moon Camp?

Our shelter is going to be built on a lava tube and the closest possible from the lunar poles, more precisely at the South Pole out there find ice deposits, irregularly on its surface. At the  South Pole, most of the ice is concentrated in lunar craters. From this with enough ice on the surface, water can serve as a resource obtaining in a more accessible way compared to that found below the surface. The large lunar caves are formed by lava tubes coming from the interior. These tubes arise when the flow of lava develops a solid crust and forms a roof over the stream lava. When it stops flowing, the tunnel empties and a hollow space. So the tubes should be safe places to live long term, because they offer a hiding place against radiation, extreme temperatures  and meteorite impacts.

How do you plan to build your Moon Camp? Describe the techniques and materials you would use.

On the Moon, we’ll mainly use lunar soil and printing technology 3D to build our fantastic camp. How will we build the camp underground, we can use backhoes to excavate the soil and the 3D printer will follow, to that we can dig and build at the same time.

Water
Food
Electricity
Air

All the water we are going to use will be extracted from the ice found in permanently shadowy craters. To melt the ice we will install large mirrors that reflected sunlight then falling on the ice. So we will create water vapor that will be captured by a dome that will be found at the top of the crater. In this dome with the accumulation of steam we will create water that will be collected and filtered for consumption by astronauts.

After bringing some food and seeds to the moon, we’ve created a place to plant some plants, but we need to get enough food from Earth to ensure that we can wait for its growth. Foods like kale and potatoes can be grown in a greenhouse protected and lit with LEDs.

The source of energy that will be used by our astronauts is sunlight. Around our entire shelter will be installed several solar panels that will convert sunlight into electrical energy. All this energy will be used so that all of our electronic devices work. For this, we will also optimize all this consumption to preserve and accumulate electrical energy in a series of energy storage systems (batteries).

Through our agricultural field we will be able to obtain our air. Photosynthesis performed by plants is a process where they manage to convert carbon dioxide into oxygen.

How do you plan to build your Moon Camp? Which materials would you use?

The environment on the Moon is very dangerous for the astronauts. Explain how your Moon Camp will protect them.

As we have already mentioned, our camp will be built inside a lava tube. These places offer a hiding place, perfect against gamma rays due to being underground and having covered the interior with a coating made with materials of the lunar soil. Inside these tubes the temperature is much more accessible (stable) and can be easily controlled. This hiding place and the coated layer also provides extremely effective protection against meteorite showers. Outside the shelter there will still be a radar so that in case of meteorite showers the astronauts can anticipate and protect themselves from danger.

Describe a day on the Moon for your Moon Camp astronaut crew.

Apart from adapting to the physical environment to which they will be subject, they would perform complex work on the moon, such as management, operation, experimentation, planting, maintenance, etc., work that should be perfectly performed to ensure the execution of the field and the safety of people in it.
