Moon Camp Pioneers Gallery 2019-2020

In Moon Camp Pioneers each team’s mission is to 3D design a complete Moon Camp using Fusion 360. They also have to explain how they will use local resources, protect astronauts from the dangerous of space and describe the living and working facilities.

Project description

Describe your Moon Camp project.

Our Project includes a Moonstation with five domes, an antenna and the powerstation with the solar cells and the fuel cell. Also we have included a rover.

The station is designed to accommodate up to four people.

Where do you want to build your Moon Camp?

Near the poles where the surface is covered with ice but also as near as possible to the equator.

We need the location close to the poles to use the ice covered surface to ensure the water supply with melted ice.

But we also want to have a location near the equator to have as much sunlight as possible.

In addition to that the temperature near the poles is not to warm for the Polyethylene we use to build the base.

How do you plan to build your Moon Camp? Describe the techniques and materials you would use.

Most of the parts have to be already there and they have to be unpacked because the base needs to be assembled as fast as possible to provide a secure accommodation.

First of all the rooms with vital machines need to be assembled so that human can survive already without a spacesuit.

For the housings we use polyethylene against the radiation. But it is also the main building material so that two different materials are not necessary.

The space between the inner and the outer wall of the Rooms is filled with lunar rocks to protect against the radiation in addition to the polyethylene.

Water
Food
Electricity
Air

Because of the location near the poles we have access to ice which can be used for water extraction. For the first days or months the astronauts have to use water they brought from the earth.
Polluted water will be refreshed on the moon. But we have some water loss through the airlock so we have to add new water to the system to compensate the loss.

The plants which provide the oxygen can be eaten by the Astronauts. Instead of the sunlight we use electric light sources to grow plants because they can not survive the long sunlight periode. With the help of the artificial light source a “normal” day can be simulated and the harvest can be maximised.

Solar power is used to split water in Oxygen and Hydrogen during the day period. To ensure enough energy for the long night period the hydrogen and the oxygen can react and deliver electricity.

We use different plants to provide enough oxygen. 31,5m of Algaes to ensure oxygen for 3.9 Astronauts and 22m of other plants for 1,7 Astronauts. Together we have Oxygen for 5,6 Astronauts while only four Astronauts stay on the moon.

How do you plan to build your Moon Camp? Which materials would you use?

The environment on the Moon is very dangerous for the astronauts. Explain how your Moon Camp will protect them.

With the help of the polyethylene and the lunar rocks between the outer and inner room wall we can protect the astronauts from radiation. Also every tunnel between the domes has an pressure door included to secure the station in case of an leck in the outer shell. Of Course we have backup systems for every important system like the fuel cells or the antenna. To provide a long residence the astronauts have access to all blueprints of every device to repair them if necessary.

Describe a day on the Moon for your Moon Camp astronaut crew.

The main purpose of the moon camp should be to survive a long time on the moon. The results could be important to build a colony on Mars for example. The work with the highest priority will be to improve living conditions and to keep the station stable.

If there is time left they can spend time in research.

The different atmosphere and the weaker gravitation give the opportunities for new experiments.

Another very important part of the day will be sport because of the weak gravitation the muscle mass will decrease. To prevent long time consequences the astronauts have to work out around two hours a day.
