Moon Camp Explorers Gallery 2020-2021

In Moon Camp Explorers each team’s mission is to 3D design a complete Moon Camp using Tinkercad. They also have to explain how they will use local resources, protect astronauts from the dangerous of space and describe the living and working facilities.

Project description

We named our Moon Camp, Camp Andromeda. We named it after the Andromeda galaxy and after the Andromeda constellation. Naming our Moon Camp after Andromeda gives humanity hope that we can someday explore the unknown of the universe.
Visiting the moon is our first little step outside into the neighborhood of the galaxy, venturing further towards the city of Andromeda. We have a long way to go, but we’ll eventually succeed. No matter which Andromeda theory you believe in, we will unite and explore the universe, and we’ll do it together.

Camp Andromeda will provide our astronauts with all the necessities and more. Like the ISS, our astronauts will get weekends off.

We have come to the Moon to establish a gateway to Mars and to deepen our knowledge on how the human body responds to life in space.

Where do you want to build your Moon Camp?

Lunar lava tubes

Why did you choose this location?

We built our Moon Camp in the lava tubes because they have more warmth, with temperatures at about -20 degrees Celsius. They also offer protection from the asteroids, debris, and cosmic/solar radiation. The tunnels are very spacious, as some can stretch longer than 300 meters.

How do you plan to build your Moon Camp? Which materials would you use?

For the walls of the geometric dome we will use stainless steel.
For the radiation protection layer we will use magnetically charged metal.
For our green house we will use polyurethane and bulletproof glass.
For the connectors we will use magnetically charged metal.

Explain how your Moon Camp will provide the astronauts with:
Water
Food
Electricity
Air

At first we would need water from Earth but after that we would filter and purify our astronauts “Waste” into water for our astronauts and plants.

In the beginning we would bring canned food from Earth but then we would plant our plants and use an aquaponic to water our plants and eat fish. We can bring earthworms that help structure the soil. The worms also have another purpose: they can decompose our plant leftovers.

We would use solar energy as our primary power source and would put the solar panels outside the lava tube. The solar panels would be connected to the camp by wires. Our backup power source would be water electrolysis and use the hydrogen as power but, ONLY IN CASE OF EMERGENCY!

We would first bring O2 tanks from Earth and put them in a special storage room until needed. Then after our plants and/or algae has grown we would have an oxygen supply. Also as a backup we would use water electrolysis for the oxygen. Only in emergencies. When an emergency occurs, we will only use water electrolysis for 4 days because it takes 3 days to go to the moon and it might take a day to repair the oxygen supply.

Describe a day on the Moon for one of your Moon Camp astronauts

A day in our astronauts life would start at 6:30. After getting done with their morning ritual; their breakfast will start which consists of beans, lettuce and zucchini.

They would then exercise for an hour, followed by research in the lab for 2 hours. Next, they would clean the camp. At 12:00 they would eat lunch.

Lunch is followed by lunar experiments. Evening is for games and gym. They will have dinner, which is an adaptation of lunch.

After dinner they would have 30 minutes of free time. Next they would go to sleep at 10:00.
