Moon Camp Explorers Gallery 2020-2021

In Moon Camp Explorers each team’s mission is to 3D design a complete Moon Camp using Tinkercad. They also have to explain how they will use local resources, protect astronauts from the dangerous of space and describe the living and working facilities.

Project description

The base will consist of a structure that will include the dormitory and a research base, next to another structure that will include the common room with the canteen and some video conferencing devices. Those will work thanks to an antenna that will send the signal to the satellite which will be connected the base; the waves sent to the satellite will also be used to locate any approaching asteroids or celestial bodies. To make the base as independent as possible, there will be a greenhouse to farm crops and there will be some rovers for the exploration and extraction of water in the lunar undergrounds. For the production of electricity there will be different production methods, both based on solar rays.

Where do you want to build your Moon Camp?

Our moon camp will be located in an area with ice scraps released by meteors and asteroids.

Why did you choose this location?

Because of the importance of ice : the extracted ice from meteor shards will be melted in water by a special machine that will distribute it for various functions such as field irrigation, health care and daily use.

How do you plan to build your Moon Camp? Which materials would you use?

To build the base, only some materials that are obtainable on the moon will be used, such as regolith to make the cement that with the addition of urea, which is present in large quantities in the urine, so the cement will need less water to be created.

Explain how your Moon Camp will provide the astronauts with:
Water
Food
Electricity
Air

We will get it by melting ice.

A greenhouse will be part of our moon camp

Sun will be our main energy source: a photovoltaic storage system will use a set of batteries inside where the excess of energy will be stored. In addition to this system, a solar furnace will also contribute to the production of energy.

Oxygen will be produced by exploiting regolith: in fact regolith is made of oxygen for the 40%; a furnace will heat regolith up to 950 Celsius degrees and with the addition of electrical shocks it will be possible to split the oxygen.

Describe a day on the Moon for one of your Moon Camp astronauts

During an usual day on the Moon, the astronaut will spend some hours working in the farm and water the plants, to prevent them from withering. Then, he will have some time to, possibly, relax. After that, the astronaut will explore the moon surface to  acquire some datas. He will have some free time to stay with his colleagues, to protect the psycho-physical health of the astronauts
