Moon Camp Explorers Gallery 2020-2021

In Moon Camp Explorers each team’s mission is to 3D design a complete Moon Camp using Tinkercad. They also have to explain how they will use local resources, protect astronauts from the dangerous of space and describe the living and working facilities.

Project description

This is our moon base project. There can be 4 people on the moon base. There is the base, a biodome, a lunar lander (used only for landing the first time), a rocket (goes back and forth like a space bus and carries other stuff), a satellite for communication, a small transportation rover, an exploration rover and an experimental rover used to do experiments far from the base. The base itself has an air lock so air cannot escape. On the moon, there is less gravity and astronauts get taller and weaker. So in the base there is a small gym.

Where do you want to build your Moon Camp?

Close to the Lunar Poles

Why did you choose this location?

The lunar poles are probably the safest places to go. Regularly, it would be 123°C in the day and

-233°C in the night. However, the lunar poles have a temperature between 0°C and -50°C, which is still bad but a bit better. Also, the lunar poles have sunlight all the time, so it is good for the plants growing in the biodome. However, the plants cannot handle sunlight all the time so there are curtains that one person would pull so that they do not burn up.

How do you plan to build your Moon Camp? Which materials would you use?

To protect from radiation, the base has a polyethylene sun shield that covers everything except for other stuff like the rocket since it needs to go up. Meteorites fall rarely on the moon just like on earth so there is no protection needed and it is cheaper.

Explain how your Moon Camp will provide the astronauts with:
Water
Food
Electricity
Air

At the lunar poles, water ice has been discovered. There is a heated drill that has drilled through to get the water ice and pipes have been built so it is much easier.

The food is grown at the biodome where fruits and vegetables grow. However, other foods are not in the moon base because they cannot grow like plants, so they get delivered by rocket.

Most of the power comes from the solar panels, but the power for the rocket is CH4 (Methane) so the natural waste’s compost can fuel it.

The air can come from the biodome. Some plants are not for eating, those plants give us O2 (Oxygen) when we breath out and give the CO2 (Carbon Dioxide).

Describe a day on the Moon for one of your Moon Camp astronauts

Firstly, the astronauts would wake up and have breakfast. Next, they would do some experiments which will allow future astronauts to live better on the moon. Then there would be lunch time where the crew have their food. Afterwards, they would continue the experiments and there is time for other stuff too. Then the astronauts would sleep, but the sun almost always shines so it cannot set. There are no windows so when it is day there would be automatic artificial light and at night the lights would be turned off. To know the time when to sleep, the lights would turn off after 12 hours just like the sun sets on earth.
