Moon Camp Explorers Gallery 2020-2021

In Moon Camp Explorers each team’s mission is to 3D design a complete Moon Camp using Tinkercad. They also have to explain how they will use local resources, protect astronauts from the dangerous of space and describe the living and working facilities.

Project description

We will start by placing solar panels in our camp to produce energy. Next, we are going to bring several plants from Earth to produce oxygen and hydrogen. Our structure will consist of lunar houses and some compartments. There will be factories to produce essential supplies. Everyone will have a job and there will be robots to help on the harder tasks. Most of the garbage will go to a composting area. The rest will be reused in a 3D printer.

Where do you want to build your Moon Camp?

Close to the Lunar Equator

Why did you choose this location?

Equator experiences a wide range of temperatures: 116°C during the day to -173°C at night. This means that, during the day, a flat solar panels at the equator would collect a lot of heat and generate high amounts of energy. In contrast, installing solar panels in the poles is a complex task as they have to be built upwards.

How do you plan to build your Moon Camp? Which materials would you use?

We will use glass to build a dome, iron for the structure of the buildings, metal for the structure of the houses.

Explain how your Moon Camp will provide the astronauts with:
Water
Food
Electricity
Air

We will use underground pipes to distribute water. Water will be available in the main square to the use of the inhabitants.

Inside the dome we will have a greenhouse to produce food such as oranges, apples, lettuce… There will be also factories to make bread from cereals brought from Earth.

We will use solar panels to produce energy for our Moon camp. There will be 4 sets of panels.

The plants and trees that we have in the greenhouse are our source of oxygen. The air circulates through the trees and so it is always clean.

Describe a day on the Moon for one of your Moon Camp astronauts

First, the astronaut will have to go through the corridors made of iron, with the cylinder-shaped roof, to the greenhouse to get some food (lettuce, oranges, apples). Through the underground tubes a mechanism will bring water to the top ready to be consumed. Then, astronauts will do some exercise in one of the houses suitable for training. After training everyone goes to the greenhouse for lunch, a meal consisted of vegetables and cereals. Astronauts will exercise a bit more, and after they will have dinner, the most complete meal of the day: a mix of all the food from the other meals.
