Moon Camp Explorers Gallery 2020-2021

In Moon Camp Explorers each team’s mission is to 3D design a complete Moon Camp using Tinkercad. They also have to explain how they will use local resources, protect astronauts from the dangerous of space and describe the living and working facilities.

Project description

Our moon base consists of oxygen tanks, water, and an electricity plant. We have a command tower computer lab and greenhouses. Our dorms, gym, and extra storage are underground. There is a moon rover dock with solar panels to power both them and the base. We have a chicken coop with an oxygen supply going into it. We have anti-asteroid turrets and bathrooms, a storage house, and a clinic.

Where do you want to build your Moon Camp?

South Pole-Aitken basin

Why did you choose this location?

It is deep in the Moon’s surface, which would provide extra protection from asteroids. It also has a good temperature for the moon. It averages about 8 degrees rather than reaching 150 degrees but not going down too far like the Shackleton Crater which averages about -298 degrees Fahrenheit.

How do you plan to build your Moon Camp? Which materials would you use?

Originally we would ship supplies from earth and build it piece by piece. Later, we would try to formulate a way to use moon rock to build buildings. Supplies sent from earth would include reinforced steel and metals along with more normal materials for the interior to make the rooms feel nicer.

Explain how your Moon Camp will provide the astronauts with:
Water
Food
Electricity
Air

Water would be supplied by a purifier that takes moon ice and some water from Earth that would be stored in a water tower.

Food would be mostly plants and chicken, the astronauts would grow cabbage and corn. There would also be dry food shipped from earth.

We have solar panels for electricity and to power the moon rovers. We also have a sprinkler system in place to clean off the solar panels in case they get too much dust on them which would prevent them from working.

We are getting oxygen from the plants in our greenhouses. We are also going to ship emergency supplies from earth in case something happens to the oxygen tank. The supplies will be stored next to the dorms underground so they are safe from any possible damage that could occur.

Describe a day on the Moon for one of your Moon Camp astronauts

The astronauts would wake up at 7:00 and get ready for the day. They would eat breakfast, put on their space suits and get to work. First, they would go to the greenhouses and plant or harvest food. Next, they would split up and do their daily rounds, checking everything from oxygen levels to the water purifier.  Next one astronaut would communicate with Earth and keep them updated while the other would explore in the rovers. Then, at 1:00 they would meet back in the lounge to eat Lunch. At 2:00 one would get more water and the other would continue research. Around 6:00 all astronauts would meet up and eat dinner. When finished with dinner they would rap up for the day and then go workout in the gym. 9:00 would be downtime and all astronauts would go to bed and get ready for the next day.

Medic – Medics would follow the same schedule as the normal astronauts but their daily rounds would be in the clinic, and they would do jobs in the storage facility in case there is another astronaut in need of medical attention they would be nearby.

Ballistics Specialists – They would follow different schedules than the normal astronauts. They would work in three different eight hour shifts. During which one would rest. One would stay at the control center or turrets in case of an emergency in which he would . The other would workout, bring food to the specialist currently on duty, and be ready for anything else that they might be needed for.

Tech / Computer Specialist – They would follow the same schedule as the regular astronauts. Though their daily routine would mostly be in the computer lab. They would do anything they might need from finding possible asteroid threats that could occur in the near future or they would check up on anything with a tech related problem. They could also use CAD softwares to 3D print anything that may be needed to complete other projects or replace parts to others.
