Moon Camp Explorers Gallery 2020-2021

In Moon Camp Explorers each team’s mission is to 3D design a complete Moon Camp using Tinkercad. They also have to explain how they will use local resources, protect astronauts from the dangerous of space and describe the living and working facilities.

Project description

SR2 moon camp project is for settling 20 people on moon. The project consists of the main dome that has pods which functions as living quarters for the settlement. There is an exercise chamber for astronauts to maintain fitness. There is a factory on top of extractors which contains a geo-lab that will be used to separate lunar soil and ice. There is a room for electricity and communication. If in case, the oxygen supply gets low it will be obtained from electrolysis of water. There is a bio-lab for research on how plants grow in the moon’s soil; it consists of a food growth chamber which provides nutrition for astronauts. There are 4 missile launchers to deviate the path of the asteroids. There is an obiter placed in a moon synchronous orbit meaning it focuses on the settlement all the time. There is a landing pad and a space shuttle that will be used in case of emergency.

An Infrared Telescope in a crater is intended to monitor and detect asteroids, meteors and comets heading towards the settlement. It will also be used to discover stars, planets and other stellar objects.  The six solar panel towers harness energy from the sun and power the settlement, and these towers have sun trackers to follow the sun and provide maximum solar energy. The rovers move around the settlement, and they also help to extract lunar soil, regolith, etc. Tubes connecting the settlement keep astronauts safe from radiation while transporting them.

Where do you want to build your Moon Camp?

South pole (Factory) and Far side (rest of the settlement)

Why did you choose this location?

Factory is located on lunar South Pole because traces of water are found on South Pole. The factory is made for extracting water from lunar soil. Hence, factory will be best if located here.

Remaining settlement will be located on far side of the moon, because far side of the moon has fewer craters which will help us to make our settlement easily. Plus, the far side has thick soil. So the support system can easily go inside the moon’s surface.

How do you plan to build your Moon Camp? Which materials would you use?

Many landers have been used for moon missions. But now they are just waste. We will use these lander’s metal to make few parts of our settlement.

Then we would make bricks out of lunar soil. Also lunar regolith will be used because it is similar to volcanic sand found on Earth. The lunar regolith is a fine grey soil with a density of about 1.5 g/cm3, plus the regolith also includes breccia and rock fragments from the local bedrock.

Explain how your Moon Camp will provide the astronauts with:
Water
Food
Electricity
Air

Astronauts will be provided with water by the geo-lab present in the factory. The extractors will send lunar ice/soil to the geo-lab. The geo-lab would separate the moon soil and water. It will also try to extract other metals and materials. The water will be purified by the geo-lab itself. So that pure water can be used for various purposes like watering plants in the bio-lab, drinking, washing, etc. Additionally, water produced due to transpiration from plants will be used.

Food will be provided by plants in the plant growth chamber which is present in the bio-lab. Plants will be producing food as well as oxygen for the humans. There will be various types of plants like flowering, non-flowering, fruit plants, vegetable plants, etc. Plants will be watered via drip irrigation method i.e. thin tubes provide water drop by drop into the soil containing the plant, hence, maintaining moisture. Water tank is attached behind bio-lab to which the water is in turn supplied via the geo-lab.

Whole settlement works on electricity for example: treadmills in the exercise chamber, supercomputer in the main dome, other machines, etc. The electricity will be produced by solar panels. There are 6 big solar panels along with batteries to store the excess energy and use it during the night. 3 solar panels will be located in front of the main dome and 3 behind, because when the 3 solar panels are under shadow of main dome, other 3 can provide electricity. These panels have Sun trackers which follow the Sun and provide maximum solar energy.

Oxygen will be produced by plants in the plant growth chamber. But the air for astronauts won’t be pure oxygen; it would be mixture of various gases present on earth like nitrogen, oxygen, etc., in appropriate proportions because humans are adapted to live in mixture of gases. Also pure oxygen is not good for humans. Carbon dioxide exhaled by humans will be used for plants. Tubes will transfer it to carbon dioxide pump. If oxygen for humans gets reduced then it will be obtained from electrolysis of water.

Describe a day on the Moon for one of your Moon Camp astronauts

Date: 22/4/2021

Dear Diary,

It has been another awesome day at the moon camp. Come to think of it, nearly every day is awesome in the moon camp. So, first, we woke up as usual in the main dome, and had a quick breakfast of carrots and beans (Yum!) from the plant growth chamber. After breakfast, we went around to check if everything was still working properly while we were sleeping, and then, we went to the exercise chamber to exercise (all this time, there are CO2 extractors hidden in every room to extract CO2 from the air we breathe and give them to the plants).

After that, most of us headed either to the factory or the bio-lab to conduct experiments. We then relayed our findings back to planet earth thanks to an obiter hovering above us. We quickly had our lunch, and spend an hour chatting and admiring our home planet from the moon. Then, we experimented until dusk, after which we had our supper. Before going to bed, we did one final moonwalk to see if everything is working as it should, and then, here I am, updating you. Goodnight!

Love, James Richards
