Moon Camp Explorers Gallery 2020-2021

In Moon Camp Explorers each team’s mission is to 3D design a complete Moon Camp using Tinkercad. They also have to explain how they will use local resources, protect astronauts from the dangerous of space and describe the living and working facilities.

Project description

The design of the bubbles was inspired by a trip that I took to a bubble lodge hotel that I took a trip to once. The room was constantly blowing air to pressurize it. There was an airlock chamber just like on the moon.

My favorite part of the design was thinking about how to make it sustainable. It was important for the astronauts to be able to reuse everything over and over again.

Sustainability is important and possible with 3D printing. They can reuse plastic and metal objects that break/wear out by melting the material and using it in 3D printing new objects.

Where do you want to build your Moon Camp?

Close to the Lunar Poles

Why did you choose this location?

I chose this location because the sun shines 24-7. The solar panels shift to adjust to the sun’s location. It is still safe for the astronauts because the rubber structure of the bubbles are tinted. Except for the greenhouse.

How do you plan to build your Moon Camp? Which materials would you use?

Floors are made of metal and walls are made of rubber. It is all above ground and protected by a giant telescoping arch that can cover when needed.

Explain how your Moon Camp will provide the astronauts with:
Water
Food
Electricity
Air

It will be recycling water by filtering urine from astronauts and using this for plants. Then this evaporates from the sun, is collected with a fan, cooled off, and then re-liquefied. If you need additional water you can melt moon ice with a autonomous rover going to the south pole. It can drive that far because it was fully charged by solar power on the north pole.

Food is grown in the greenhouse. Human waste and food scraps are composted into soil.

Power is obtained from the solar panels.

Carbon Dioxide is filter by the plants to create Oxygen for the astronauts to breath.

Describe a day on the Moon for one of your Moon Camp astronauts

Wake up to the sun still shining. Eat breakfast from the food harvested the day before. Check on the sustainability systems. If needed, do maintenance. Harvest the plants and prepare food. Store food. Do any needed studies/experiments. Eat lunch. Have 1 hour and 30 minutes of time off for entertainment- maybe watch TV or have contact with family, read an e-book. Go back to work. Do 45 minutes of exercise on treadmill/weights. Take a shower. Eat dinner. Activate the electric film surrounding the bedroom walls to darken them. Go to bed with the sun shining bright outside.
