Moon Camp Explorers Gallery 2020-2021

In Moon Camp Explorers each team’s mission is to 3D design a complete Moon Camp using Tinkercad. They also have to explain how they will use local resources, protect astronauts from the dangerous of space and describe the living and working facilities.

Project description

The moon base should be built at the north pole of the Moon. It has five domes here are the names :

MB: Main Base
R: Research
RP: Rover Port
GH: Green House
L : Living

In the main base dome we install the command and control module of the Moonbase. Here we have the communications modules, main day activity area and the emergency shelter.
In the research dome all the science experiments and projects are taking place.
In the storage dome the astronauts get all the equipment necessary for their activities. In addition the storage dome houses the recycler and the rover port.
In the green house the astronauts grow fresh food like algae. This dome acts as an air purifier as oxygen is produced by the plants from toxic carbon-dioxide.
Last but not least the living dome is were every one rests and where the astronauts can enjoy some time off as well as practice their daily physical exercises to remain in shape.

Where do you want to build your Moon Camp?

Close to the Lunar Poles

Why did you choose this location?

Because in that place there is the most sunlight which can support electricity production and greenhouse development.

How do you plan to build your Moon Camp? Which materials would you use?

The Moon Base is composed of five partially buried  domes. The central dome serves as a main structure housing command and control and emergency shelter. Additional domes are dedicated to living and recreation, research, greenhouse and storage & recycling, plus the rover port. The domes are connected to the command and control dome by way of pressurised corridors which can be sealed off in case of emergency. The domes are covered by 2 layers of polyethylene strong enough to protect the base from meteorites. These should be separated by a layer of water thick enough protect from radiation.

Explain how your Moon Camp will provide the astronauts with:
Water
Food
Electricity
Air

By using a hydrogen powered fuel cell. Using hydrogen from the Moon’s atmosphere we can produce energy to heat the base as well as water. This can be used in combination with a water recycler.

Fresh food will be produced in the greenhouse for example algae because it does not take too much space and it reproduces quickly; a consistent crop could be achieved quickly. This also acts as a air purifier.

The main power should come from the solar panels surrounding the moon base with surplus energy stored in batteries. In addition a back-up generator should be installed. This could be a small nuclear power generator which could be configured to sustain the mainbase with life support functions and critical communications in case of the solar plant failure.

The greenhouse will act as a air purifier in addition oxygen recyclers will be installed.

Describe a day on the Moon for one of your Moon Camp astronauts

A day on the moon will start with physical exercise and a healthy breakfast. This will be followed by research and scientific activity and experiments. Regular maintenance around the base should be performed to assure full functionality and safety.  Later some of the bases astronauts could go out to explore the Moon’s surface as well as its underground.
