Moon Camp Pioneers Gallery 2020-2021

In Moon Camp Pioneers each team’s mission is to 3D design a complete Moon Camp using Fusion 360. They also have to explain how they will use local resources, protect astronauts from the dangerous of space and describe the living and working facilities.

Project description

Hello instructors, our project mainly includes a camp where astronauts can live and work on the moon. The top floor is a place for astronauts to rest, and the second floor is an office area, where computers capable of working are arranged. The bottom floor is equivalent to a conference room, with a large screen in the middle that can be connected with the earth, so as to tell some important information in time. Of course, we also built several signal towers and a more conspicuous signal receiver. Although we don’t know whether these can really be received and sent on the moon, there are two large solar panels to provide energy, and finally there is a lunar rover, which is mainly used to better explore and protect astronauts’ safety instead of transporting things, so it is more inclined to build truck models. This is probably our camp introduction.

Where do you want to build your Moon Camp?

If there is a suitable place to build a lunar camp, what I can think of is that the daily light is relatively sufficient, which can ensure that astronauts can live normally. Of course, it is also a place where astronauts can keep in touch with the earth at all times. After all, the life and health of astronauts are the first.

How do you plan to build your Moon Camp? Describe the techniques and materials you would use.

These materials need to find a way to start with the resources of the moon itself. More than 90% of the raw materials required for geopolymer concrete can come from the in-situ resources of the moon, which can bring us enough materials for construction, and have good resistance to extreme environment in the lunar environment; based on extrusion printing and powder printing molding process, geopolymer materials can meet the construction needs and environmental requirements of the lunar environment. In situ construction of lunar base based on geopolymer is realized by using lunar in situ resources. There is lunar dust on the surface of the moon, and its particle size is generally less than 1 mm. The impact of lunar dust is very huge, so aluminum is needed to build a space base, because aluminum and oxygen can form dense particles

The aluminum oxide film can isolate the moon dust well.

The environment on the Moon is very dangerous for the astronauts. Explain how your Moon Camp will protect them.

Our camp has a hard housing shell and a transparent tempered glass made in China with a certain thickness on the top floor to resist the impact of possible small meteorites. If we can’t resist it, we can take a lunar rover to leave. The lunar rover also has the ability to resist, and the spikes on the wheels ensure that we can travel normally on the moon. The huge signal receiver ensures that we can keep in touch with the earth at all times, and can predict possible dangers to a certain extent.

Explain how your Moon Camp will provide the astronauts with:
Water
Food
Electricity
Air

Water source is really a difficult problem. The water needed by astronauts mainly depends on the reserve water brought at the beginning, and chemical reaction is carried out to produce water and put it into the reserve box for future use. Of course, some used water and discharged urine can also be filtered with a filter, which is also a water source. You can’t waste water casually on the moon.

In terms of food, we could not get food on the moon at first, so we had to carry enough food from the earth. And when we build a lunar plant farm and survive, our food will be guaranteed. In addition, there are sufficient minerals and sunlight on the moon, which can provide nutrients for plants to carry out good photosynthesis. But at present, only some plants can be planted.

In terms of power supply, the moon is a little closer to the sun than the earth, and has no ozone layer, which can refract and reflect sunlight. So the moon has enough solar energy, that is, we have built large solar panels, which can provide enough power for the space base. And as long as there is no problem with the battery board, there will be endless energy.

When it comes to air, we should try our best not to let the air run out in a closed space. Then we can plant some plants indoors and absorb carbon dioxide to produce a little air. We can also use some equipment to take it to the camp and use the chemical reaction of absorbing carbon dioxide to produce air to produce air.

Explain what would be the main purpose of your Moon Camp (for example: commercial, scientific, and/or tourist purposes).

Our lunar camp is mainly used for scientific research. After all, the residences are equipped with computers and large screens, and the lunar rover is designed to travel longer distances on the moon. Moreover, there are many things on the moon that deserve our exploration and discovery. The main function of the lunar camp should also be established for this purpose.

Describe a day on the Moon for your Moon Camp astronaut crew.

We can’t rely on the first day after the base is built. Therefore, we can only eat the food we carry in advance, and then we can live on it after the plants bear fruit. In terms of water sources, we have built chemical synthesis devices, which can use oxygen and hydrogen to synthesize water to supplement water sources. Because of the battery board, there is no lack of electric energy. Charge the rover and prepare to look for materials elsewhere. And we’ve built large signal transmitters to keep in touch with the earth all the time. In addition, a signal transmitting device is also installed above the spacecraft, which can transmit information with the main transmitting station and lock the position to prevent problems. After a day’s work, we have a rest room on the third floor of our base for us to rest. And the rest and work of the rotation, always keep vigilant, no matter when someone has to monitor the device and the outside situation. Ensure that all astronauts can spend the day safely.
