Moon Camp Pioneers Gallery 2020-2021

In Moon Camp Pioneers each team’s mission is to 3D design a complete Moon Camp using Fusion 360. They also have to explain how they will use local resources, protect astronauts from the dangerous of space and describe the living and working facilities.

Project description

This project is mainly used for education and science popularization. The camp is divided into four areas: residence, biological culture base, oxygen station and nuclear power station. The residence provides comfortable and safe living, storage space and exploration and research environment for lunar campers. The biological culture base can cultivate vegetables for the living food needs of camp personnel, and also can cultivate new edible vegetables for better survival. The oxygen station is to store the oxygen produced by the sand on the moon through a series of reactions and the oxygen produced by the photosynthesis of plants in the oxygen bottle for the campers to use. Nuclear power plants mainly provide electric energy and kinetic energy for astronauts to better prepare for lunar exploration. There are solar panels near the four areas to convert solar energy into other forms of energy for campers. We also have four lunar rovers for astronauts to explore the moon. Based on the above, our project can provide astronauts with further exploration of the moon, and also provide a real and vivid learning environment for teenagers to cultivate their interest in the universe.

Where do you want to build your Moon Camp?

We plan to build it in the melting hole near the north pole of the moon, because the terrain there is relatively flat, which is conducive to the take-off and landing of the lunar sphere spacecraft; There are some areas near the north and south poles of the moon under the sun’s permanent irradiation, and there is ice water in the places where the sun can’t shine. Because the moon sea is mostly concentrated in the north pole of the moon, the moon base is built in the north pole of the moon. The lunar melt hole not only has good thermal insulation performance, but also can effectively protect astronauts from cosmic radiation and micro meteorite rain.

How do you plan to build your Moon Camp? Describe the techniques and materials you would use.

There is no atmosphere on the moon that can be protected, which means the moon cannot resist harmful cosmic radiation. That is, the residents of the moon need to build the walls of the building thick enough to withstand cosmic radiation. At the same time, the walls of the building should be very strong to resist the pressure difference inside and outside and the impact of the micro meteorites – tiny rocks and dust will impact the surface of the building at high speed. So when we start building houses on the moon, we will use lunar concrete, a mixture of sulfur and aggregate. The water resources on the moon are very scarce. The use of lunar concrete makes the walls porous, firm and water-free. The outer walls of the residential, nuclear and oxygen stations are almost all moon concrete. Wood used in the moon camp, and almost all the electronics used in the settlement are transported from the earth. Sensors are around the main buildings of the lunar camp, and when foreign objects approach the moon camp, the laboratory will immediately alarm astronauts. We have four advanced telescopes from earth to better detect the moon. The center biological culture base uses vacuum glass air defense cover with special materials to thicken, which can meet the photosynthesis of plants and protect plants.

The environment on the Moon is very dangerous for the astronauts. Explain how your Moon Camp will protect them.

The buildings in the lunar camp are built with lunar concrete, which is strong and can greatly reduce the impact of harmful cosmic radiation on people, and has a good protection effect on people. In addition, there is a circular air raid shelter in the middle of the building. Once the building is damaged and the atmosphere leaks, people can take refuge in it and wait for the support of people on earth. When people are really killed, people’s physical fitness is very important, so if you want to live on the moon, in order to prevent muscle damage and osteoporosis, you must go to the gym every day to exercise and enhance your physical fitness.

Explain how your Moon Camp will provide the astronauts with:
Water
Food
Electricity
Air

Water is an important material to maintain life. We will grow plants in transparent greenhouses. Plants will undergo photosynthesis and use containers to collect water droplets on the greenhouses to maintain people’s survival. We will also use the used water and urine produced by human body in the sewage purification pool after purification to ensure people’s survival.

The food that the residents of the lunar camp need for survival is mainly plants. Meat and other food should be brought from the earth. For the time being, it is not easy for the moon to realize animal breeding and meat food production. We will use a place in the lunar camp to specially cultivate and grow vegetables. We can use human excrement or other substances as fertilizer.

Our lunar camp is close to the north pole, and the solar radiation is relatively stable. We will build solar panels outside the cave, and use solar energy to convert light energy into other forms of energy. We will also build a nuclear fission power system on the moon to provide power and kinetic energy, so we don’t have to worry about power and kinetic energy.

We will collect the oxygen produced by plants for human respiration. There will be an “oxygen making machine” in our lunar camp. Scientists find that there is a lot of oxygen in the sand of the moon. First, we use forklift to dig the sand of the moon automatically, select the oxygen-containing iron minerals, and then use hydrogen to reduce the oxygen-containing iron minerals to make fresh water. With water, electricity makes water electrolysis, and oxygen and hydrogen are obtained. Oxygen is liquefied and stored in large oxygen bottles, which can be supplied to camp personnel at any time.

Explain what would be the main purpose of your Moon Camp (for example: commercial, scientific, and/or tourist purposes).

This project is mainly used for education and science popularization, and the audience is mainly young people of all ages from 14 to 20 years old. Through the establishment of lunar camp activities, young people can have the opportunity to live and learn in the lunar environment, understand the environment on the moon, provide a real and vivid learning environment for young people and the learning opportunity to explore and Research on their own, and enhance their understanding of the moon and the world The understanding of the universe, cultivate young people’s interest in the universe, stimulate their spirit of exploration, contribute to the cause of the motherland, and promote the progress and development of science and technology.

Describe a day on the Moon for your Moon Camp astronaut crew.

Lunar camp according to Beijing time schedule work and rest time, get up at 7:30 in the morning, after half an hour of brushing teeth and washing face and rest time, lunar camp personnel began to prepare for breakfast, after an hour of balanced nutrition breakfast, at 8:30 all the staff are ready to exercise in the gym, after an hour of usual exercise, everyone free for an hour. During the two hours from 10 o’clock to 12 o’clock, all the staff went into the laboratory and observation station on the third floor for experiments and observations. During the two and a half hours from 12:00 to 2:00, the astronauts can have lunch and lunch break. At 2:10, all the crew gather to prepare for outdoor observation. They leave their residence at 2:30. During the two and a half hours from 2:30 to 5:00, the astronauts go to the biological culture base, the oxygen station and the nuclear power station for maintenance and observation according to the route. Some of the crew will drive a lunar rover Repair the solar panel to ensure sufficient power supply. Finally, four astronauts were sent to take a lunar rover to observe and sample near the camp. After returning to the place of residence at five o’clock, all the staff will have a regular meeting to report and summarize. After the regular meeting, they can carry out free activities within a certain range, and go to bed at nine at the latest, so as to ensure that the camp personnel get enough sleep and make sufficient preparations for the next day’s work.
