Moon Camp Pioneers Gallery 2020-2021

In Moon Camp Pioneers each team’s mission is to 3D design a complete Moon Camp using Fusion 360. They also have to explain how they will use local resources, protect astronauts from the dangerous of space and describe the living and working facilities.

Project description

Calypso Moon Base has rooms for each important activity, joined together through structures and positioned according to their utilities. There are laboratories for research, places where human resources are processed, storage areas and rooms for people.

Each member made objects that meet on the model and aim to help people on Calypso Moon Base. Regardless of the mission of a man who arrived at calypso moon camp, we made sure that he will have a great time and a safe experience at the same time.

Where do you want to build your Moon Camp?

We want to build our base in Clavius Crater, a lunar crater located in the south of the Earth’s satellite on the “illuminated” side, having a diameter of 225 km and a depth of 3 km. The advantages that determined us to establish the lunar colony in Clavius Crater is the presence of water in the lunar substrate, providing a source of water, Clavius having the highest concentration of water on the lunar surface.  Another advantage that the Crater gives is the presence of sunlight (2 weeks), used to obtain photovoltaic energy. We also want to explore Moon and this place allows us to bring new information.

How do you plan to build your Moon Camp? Describe the techniques and materials you would use.

The first stage of the construction of the base consists in the creation of a foundation of 0.3 meters in depth followed by lifting.  The base is made up of simple bodies (circles, hexagons, triangles) chosen due to the convenient distribution of forces on the structure. The materials chosen for the coating are 6al4v titanium aluminum exterior and aluminum interior. The base is located at the N end of the Clavius Crater 3 km into the crater. The materials used in the structure of the Lunar Calypso base will be represented by 6al4v titan-aluminum alloys, outside the structure due to the resistance to solar radiation (alpha and beta partially and gamma ones).  Along with the easier transport of the material, not being as heavy as the other lead alloys.  Inside the structure, the walls will be supported by aluminum alloys due to their high strength and more efficient transport.

The environment on the Moon is very dangerous for the astronauts. Explain how your Moon Camp will protect them.

Calypso Lunar Base is an international initiative to establish the first extended lunar colony in the most comfortable conditions, so it was equipped on the outside with alloys that should minimize human-radiation interaction, and thus ensure health and homeostasis. The Calypso base is equipped with nutrition specialists who will ensure a varied diet and suitable for the physical characteristics of each member along with individual sports programs, in order to maintain the best possible parameters of muscle groups and other organ systems. To ensure the astronauts health, the base is provided with : a gym, where they spend about 1-2 hours a day lifting weights and running on the treadmill; two special bedrooms which are adapted to the conditions on the Moon and a medical room equipped with the necessary instruments.Calypso is equipped with telecommunications programs so that astronauts can keep in touch with family and friends on Earth.

Explain how your Moon Camp will provide the astronauts with:
Water
Food
Electricity
Air

The water in the lunar colony will be obtained mainly through the degradation of the lunar rocks by reduction to simple elements followed by hydrolysis. The water resulting from this process will be stored in a tank used for agriculture, hydratation and hygiene. The water in the colony will be recycled as much as possible, by repeated hydrolysis and straining through porous stones for purification.

Calypso Moon Base includes two greenhouses which will produce astronauts` food. They will have a plant-based diet and the daily manue ensure both the ideal intake of calories and nutrients. Beans are an important source of fiber, potatoes are used for carbohydrates, green peas and spinach for magnesium, sodium and iron.
People will take care of plants, assuring that they have enough water and light. Plants will be fixed.
At maturity, plants are colected and stored in containers. While another culture is growing, the food is enough. There are containers where people can put food from Earth.

The energy that will support the Lunar Calypso base will be obtained by photovoltaic power, by the 37 amorphous silicon solar cells resistant to high temperatures during the Lunar days, positioned on a V-shaped structure, The panels are a variant, 100% sustainable, but the problem occurs during the monthly night (14 days), the problem solved, with the help of 150 MW batteries.

In Calypso Moon Base we need pure oxygen for eight people. Plants can convert CO2 from astronauts` breathing into pure oxygen through photosynthesis. Even there are two greenhouses, this method can produce only around half of the cantity which is needed, so people will also get oxygen from the electrolysis of water.
Living in Clavius Crater, astronauts can extract a lot of water. The water molecules from a tank will be split into oxygen and hydrogen, then stored in different secure containers.
Even this process is safe, astronauts will have oxygen tubes for emergency situations.

Explain what would be the main purpose of your Moon Camp (for example: commercial, scientific, and/or tourist purposes).

The purpose of the Calypso Lunar Base is one of colonization, thorough research of the Lunar Biotope, and the establishment of the first extended lunar base on the surface of the Moon, with an international crew of 8 people (4- Electrical Engineers, 1-Geological Engineer, 1- Surgeon with  specializations and in nutrition, 1- Biologist with specialization and surgery, 1- theoretical physicist).  The crew is not permanently changed during 2 years, so that the astronauts’ body is not too affected by returning home, it will be sent in 2 trenches, each tranche being 4 people, so that the already experienced crew initiates the newcomer.  will have specializations similar to the original (engineers, geologists, biologists, doctors, physicists).

Describe a day on the Moon for your Moon Camp astronaut crew.

One of the 8 members of the Calypso crew, and also one of the 2 doctors present at the base on the Moon. He starts his morning by doing his own hygiene in one of the 2 bathrooms in the human habitat. Breakfast coming, he has to make a menu with a nutritional value suitable for each astronaut, according to the weight, height, activity of each member. He and the other members are heading to their daily responsibilities, Electrical engineers check the activity of water pumps. The geological engineer checked the data collected by Rover, to find other craters that have water in the substrate in the event of establishing a new colony, on the surface of the Moon.  After the crew members perform their tasks, they go to the Medical Center to check the parameters of the body are stable, and to establish a Sports Training program by one of them and his assistant. After the check, the crew members start their daily sports training in the gym, in groups of 4 so that in case of an electronic malfunction or in case of an injury, a part of the crew can be available.  After the sports training, most of the crew will rest, talking and storytelling with their family and friends on the Earth. Dinner follows, they prescribe with equal eyes the nutritious menu of each member. The day ends in the outpost with the last checks, and minutes of crew relaxation, followed by the withdrawal of each in the rooms, for rest.
