Moon Camp Pioneers Gallery 2020-2021

In Moon Camp Pioneers each team’s mission is to 3D design a complete Moon Camp using Fusion 360. They also have to explain how they will use local resources, protect astronauts from the dangerous of space and describe the living and working facilities.

Project description

Canmix 1. 0 is a lunar base characterised by a supply system that does not pollute the moon’s atmosphere and is able to provide the basic necessities for living, as well as space for entertainment, research, rest, sanitary areas and energy control room; sufficient conditions for approximately 4 astronauts in a period of at least one year, this is thanks to its traditional and hydroponic crops, the treatment system for organic and inorganic residues, because every part of the lunar base is designed for such purposes, and also thanks to the methods used to obtain energy, including the use of solar panels on top of the Shackleton crater.

Where do you want to build your Moon Camp?

We will build it in the Shackleton crater, located at the South Pole of the Moon, where it will be able to be seen from Earth with professional and powerful instruments. This region was chosen because the sunlight is permanent in the area, which allows a more efficient way of obtaining certain resources such as energy, which will be provided mainly by solar panels and the large amount of ice will allow it to serve as a source of water after being collected and processed.

How do you plan to build your Moon Camp? Describe the techniques and materials you would use.

The main materials that will be used for our lunar camp will be brought from Earth so they cannot be so heavy, the ones we have chosen have a function in each place, as will be named next, and in the thermal part we will use ultra-temperature ceramics, as this will resist the heat, aluminium and icopor. For the columns and walls we will use lunar concrete which is a mixture of sulphur and aggregate, which is strong enough to resist breaking. To avoid radiation and to be able to protect the astronauts we plan to place it in the Shackleton crater. Power will be provided by solar panels. Our design option is for it to be oval in shape, which will have two floors, on the first floor will be bathrooms, laboratories, electrical room, garden, entertainment, three rooms, organic and inorganic waste treatment, on the second floor will be bathrooms, one room, equipment room, kitchen and dining room, communications, sensor monitoring, entertainment. The place will be suitable for four astronauts, where they will be able to do their normal life inside the place unless they go outside because as it is known there is no oxygen on the moon so they would have to wear some suits.

The environment on the Moon is very dangerous for the astronauts. Explain how your Moon Camp will protect them.

Our camp will have a thermal protection in charge of ultra-temperature ceramics, aluminium and icopor, for the protection of micrometeorites we are placed in a strategic position of the base, which is located inside a cave, in addition, to go out they will be forced to use space suits called IEVA that will be used to work in the intravehicular and extravehicular moment, They are designed for the conditions of space so that they do not run any risk, which will be located inside each of the exits of the lunar camp, all this so that the camp and its infrastructure is safe for the astronauts who live there as well as for the experiments that can be carried out inside the lunar camp, they will also have the additional protection provided by the structure and materials of the same.

Explain how your Moon Camp will provide the astronauts with:
Water
Food
Electricity
Air

The position we are in allows us to be in close access to ice sources, which is why we plan to get our water supplies from them. We are going to have tools that will allow us to break and collect this ice, so it can be taken from vehicles to tanks where the heat of the environment reaches them in order to experience the change from melting to water and then go through a system of pipes to reach the base and within this to make its process of purification or elimination of certain substances according to the purpose that has been chosen beforehand, furthermore this will allow us to develop a system of sanitary processes in which nothing is wasted and the substances that come out of these processes can be used to the maximum.

In order to obtain food of vegetable origin we are going to implement a hydroponic garden in which we are going to have a variety of crops and traditional vegetable plots, in which the harvest will come from soil fertilised with the compost that comes out as a result of some processes that are carried out inside the base. In addition, to satisfy the body’s need of proteins, we will have a space dedicated to the cultivation of in vitro meat and other types of food or condiments, as well as dehydrated food and different solutions brought from the earth.

The energy used in our base, mainly comes from the solar panels located at the top of the crater, which absorb the sun’s rays and in turn will give access to the generation of reliable and sustainable energy for our camp on a constant basis; We will also have other secondary energy sources such as faeces, which after going through a transformation process in which they are converted into hydrocarbons, reducing the level of Co2, will serve as fuel and we will make use of the energy created from the exercise that our astronauts will perform, as they must do it on a mandatory basis, thanks to a stationary bicycle which will be coupled to an electric generator.

Our air/O2 will be obtained by means of an oxygen generating system, which consists of separating the elements resulting from the water and urine fluids, by means of the electrolysis process, in the case of urine, the resulting hydrogen will not be thrown into the atmosphere and will be used for the development of other chemical reactions.

Explain what would be the main purpose of your Moon Camp (for example: commercial, scientific, and/or tourist purposes).

Its objective would be scientific, because research on the moon will continue, and experiments of all kinds will begin to be carried out on this satellite, in order to obtain more information about it. On the other hand, it is hoped that the advances made by the astronauts during their time there will have a great impact on the world, and that they will make a positive contribution to space, as we do not want to pollute it. They will also have time to explore the place in depth and the new things they can learn there, explore satellites and how they work, take advantage of their permanence there by analysing the geographical features, analyse the soil and collect rock samples to see new inventions with it, make manned and robotic missions on the Moon and perhaps that in the future more than five people can live in this place.

Describe a day on the Moon for your Moon Camp astronaut crew.

The day would begin with a small monitoring at the control base by one or two astronauts, while the rest of the group will be preparing breakfast for the entire crew, then everyone has breakfast and takes turns washing the dishes, they have an hour to finish tidying up themselves and their room, then they will return to monitor and check that everything is in order, then they will be divided into two teams, team A will be in charge of the tasks that involve going out or if the need arises to carry out maintenance on the outside of the structure, while team B will be in charge of all the tasks that take place inside the base.  Each team will be able to carry out the function that is determined for them, as they want to investigate new factors and they must make the most of the time available while it is allocated to the mission. Before 12:30 am they should all be inside the base and preparing everything for their lunch, after feeding, they are free until 3pm, and right at 3:01pm they go to the exercise room to start with their high intensity physical activity that depending on the day can last between 2-3 hours, at the end of the exercise they hydrate and check again in the control tower and communications afterwards they can then head off to rest and chat a bit with the team, until it is 8:30 in the evening, as at this time they head to their dormitories. At this time they go to their dormitories, where they check the changes for the last time during the day, because if this is not done, unexpected things could happen.
