Moon Camp Pioneers Gallery 2020-2021

In Moon Camp Pioneers each team’s mission is to 3D design a complete Moon Camp using Fusion 360. They also have to explain how they will use local resources, protect astronauts from the dangerous of space and describe the living and working facilities.

Project description

Our moon camp is designed to be a scientific post, prepared to support a small crew of astronauts for several moon cycles, but capable of expanding if needed. Built on the Shackleton Crater is in the perfect place for shelter, water, soil, and power. The base is divided in different rooms with different functions, such as resources treatment, medical and fitness routine, scientific research proposes and common areas. It is going to be protected by a dirt hill, against dangerous radiation and storms.

Where do you want to build your Moon Camp?

The South Pole is the ideal location to build a space base on the Moon, as it is possible to store water, since in this location the sunlight reaches the surface laterally, conserving water in the shadow of the craters, and as elevations at the level of the lunar surface captures sunlight about 200 days a year.

They can allow the use of not only water but also oxygen to live and hydrogen to propel rockets, through molecular separation. in relation to the Earth in order not to spend all the fuel in the propulsion of planetary exhaust.

Ideal locations on the South Pole: Shackleton Crater (coordinates: 89.9ºS 0.0ºE). In the basin of the South Pole-Aitken of the Moon it was detected based on the analysis of the Gravitational Recovery and Interior Laboratory missions and by, there is one or more asteroids, buried underground, which formed a 1,200 km crater.

How do you plan to build your Moon Camp? Describe the techniques and materials you would use.

Modular structure made from triangular, inflatable wall cells connected with internal life support system, based on microbiological water environment, and the positioning of the crater in relation to the sun. It’s designed to hold ground pressure and keep the inside warm as it needs to be underground.

Scientists say the lunar regolith can be used as a building material or raw material for 3D printing. The German space agency has been conducting studies with a simulator of regolith material to build bricks.

With 3D printers, the agency-built bricks in the form of interlocking blocks, which would eliminate the need for some crystallizing material, and create a protective shell, like an igloo. These bricks have thermal and weight resistance.

This would be possible by sending excavation digging to the moon, mining facilities and 3D printers to build structures.

To guarantee the structure’s resistance and to spend the least amount of magnesium oxide, a shell is made of a structure full of cells, such as a foam or a comb, which was obtained as resembling bird bones.

The environment on the Moon is very dangerous for the astronauts. Explain how your Moon Camp will protect them.

In the case of radiation, it will be physically blocked, with the thick layer of rhyolite bricks and various radiation-blocking materials, such as aluminum, advanced plastics, and liquid hydrogen. Also considering that the base will be underground, which means that there is even less radiation inside it. In this way, not only are the astronauts protected from radiation, but also from any impact that exists outside, and from the vacuum, which exists in space, because they will be in a closed system with good oxygen. Also, not destroying the equipment that covers the astronauts. As the regolith itself contains oxygen in its composition, it produces water vapor, with this vapor being able to be separated to produce, individually, hydrogen and oxygen. Thus, it will be possible to breathe in oxygen, without problems of running out.

The fact that the lunar base is underground will also help to maintain higher temperatures, which will be necessary, since the nights in class are quite cold.

Explain how your Moon Camp will provide the astronauts with:
Water
Food
Electricity
Air

The idea is to locate the base on the south pole, water is going to be mined from the bottom of the crater, using two specialized NASA’s robots, RASSORs. The excavators, controlled by astronauts, would be collecting solid material containing water crystals.
Then, it would be transported to the base and treated to be used for human consumption, and other activities.
Also, no possible sources of water will be wasted, and so, the crew urine, breath and other activities waste will be treated to reuse the present water.

Our lunar base will have a self-sufficient greenhouse growing healthy food without needing soil, called hydroponic growth. The greenhouse contains water-cooledsodium vapor lamps and long envelopes that are filled with seeds. It will also be used The Vegetable Production System, known as Veggie, Veggie’s purpose is to help plant growth in microgravity, while adding fresh food to the astronauts’ diet.
Veggie can grow a variety of plants, including lettuce, tomatoes, peppers, beans, and antioxidant-rich food.
To make a more balanced diet, the base also has an in vitro meat grow laboratory, that allows astronauts to eat meat in space.

Outside of the lunar base, there will be a solar farm, able to produce all the power the crew needs.
Some places on the moon, are always receiving light, but even with that, a backup plan is always wanted. For that we have lithium-ion batteries, that can store solar energy for when the panels are not working and are known for lasting very long and recharging hundreds of times before degrading, helping to fuel every place that needs to be constantly working to assure the crew survival.

The initial air will be brought from Earth, but over time oxygen, nitrogen and water will be extracted from lunar dirt and treated and refined for consumption. It is also possible to make the electrolyse of water to produce oxygen and hydrogen that can be used as rocket fuel.
The hydroponic farm can also help with the production of air. Some algae, like Spirulina, can produce oxygen and at the same time be used for human consumption, we only need 8 m2 per person to be able to sustain a life there.

Explain what would be the main purpose of your Moon Camp (for example: commercial, scientific, and/or tourist purposes).

The main purpose of our moon camp would be scientific research, such has studying the moon grounds and samples obtained from expeditions to other planets and comets or observing the space with a telescope. It will also be possible to study the climate change indicators allowing us to analyse Earth’s ecosystem health and decrease world hunger because satellite imagery can identify crop yield through a magnified view of each pixel, allowing farmers to understand when to water, fertilize and harvest crops. It also can be used as a refill station for hydrogen powered rockets.

As it grows, it can be used as a commercial point between Earth and mines on comets, bringing to Earth materials hard to find.

Describe a day on the Moon for your Moon Camp astronaut crew.

Even on the moon, the astronauts are dependent of a 24-hour day, so on our moon camp, the crew will wake up with an alarm since on the moon it is always bright, at 7am after eight hours of sleep, have breakfast, and then at meeting to plan the day schedule and a health check until 8h30. The activities start at 8h30 am with scientific research until 12h30 pm, then goes lunch until 14 pm. All facilities need maintenance, so from 14 pm to 18 pm, the crew will make sure every equipment is working well, inside and outside the base. To keep the muscles working well, every day the crew will have to exercise for two hours, so until 20 pm every astronaut will exercise and do personal hygiene. From 20 pm to 21h30 pm it is dinner and from 21h30 pm to 23pm it is social communications with family and friends. During the weekend, only maintenance, cleaning, communications, and exercise must be done, the spare time can be filled with hobbies.
