Project description

MOON BASE
(GREENHOUSE CROP MODULE)
The intent of our research is to try to offer astronauts of future space missions a viable alternative to current solutions: dehydrated food or pre-packaged by the appropriate bodies.

In this regard, we consider it essential to combine more food strategies with each other, to reduce the risks associated with each individual strategy. For the astronaut’s body to function properly, a varied diet is necessary, in fact, our body takes different substances from different foods commas all necessary for our health. You could include in the astronauts’ diet honey and royal jelly which are natural foods with high energy content and do not perish; in fact, the sugars contained in honey prevent bacteria from making it perish, In the case of royal jelly, conservation through the mechanism of freeze-drying must be used.

Our group has chosen the use of the cultivation method through hydroculture that allows the plants to grow quickly and ripen the fruits within 30 days. It is necessary to create a microclimate inside the greenhouses, using solar panels that give energy to special xenon led lamps that simulate the sun’s rays and are watered by the so-called yellow gold (water enriched with urea).

Another food “cultivated” in vitro is synthetic meat, created from animal cells or tissues. Thanks to the techniques of bioengineering, a single cell is multiplied in the laboratory thus creating meat. Growing organs and tissues 3D printed with zero gravity is a faster process than on earth. This technique is still very expensive to make on the moon.
