Moon Camp Explorers Gallery 2021-2022

In Moon Camp Explorers each team’s mission is to 3D design a complete Moon Camp using Tinkercad. They also have to explain how they will use local resources, protect astronauts from the dangerous of space and describe the living and working facilities.

Project description

Our project was developed in function that human beings can inhabit the moon, we also think it is strategic that we can make explorations both for observation with telescopes from the dark zone of the moon, as well as being a main base to go to other planets. We loved the project since our teachers presented it to us, that’s why we put “Encanto” as the movie, to develop a beautiful little house that could take care of us, we must know more about it, that its gravity is lower compared to the earth, we must exercise, we must take care of the meteorites, we must protect ourselves from the sun’s rays, we must protect ourselves from the sun’s rays, we must protect ourselves from the sun’s rays, we must protect ourselves from the sun’s rays, We must take care of the sun’s rays because they exceed the limits allowed to survive them, the extremely low and high temperatures, so the materials designed for vehicles, domes, spacesuits, spacecraft must be very strong as titanium, carbon, steel, protective mesh and glass with UV protection systems, gamma rays, Alpha or Beta. We were impressed by the fact that there was frozen water inside the moon, and that through the regolith there was also a way to make oxygen. We presented our base with which we worked for 2 months.

Where do you want to build your Moon Camp?

Close to the lunar poles

Why did you choose this location?

It is a place where temperatures are leveled, having part dark and part with sunlight we can have bearable temperatures for humans, around 0 to -50 degrees Celsius and under the surface of the moon we could get to have between -20 to 0 degrees. Of course, we could place heating by means of resistances to improve the temperature.

How do you plan to build your Mooncamp? Which materials will you use?

The idea is to use as much as we can of robots and machinery to build it, we plan to improve the place and arrange it to install the domes and the best idea as we said is to make it under the surface of the moon, here we have more suitable temperatures to support our body, the idea is to use as much as we can of lunar rocks, compacted lunar dust and 3D printing systems using the lunar soil, on the other hand place many capsules or domes with which we enclose the place and not allow the oxygen inside them to escape. Also the idea is that they feel comfortable and have some things to have fun, exercise, sleep and that they can get food, water, energy, how to move to the earth and other planets, as well as provide communications to the earth and their companions.

Initially the rovers go in search of sites where there may be accumulation of water in the form of ice, then begins the process of drilling and extraction of these accumulations of ice to be transported in solid form by large cars to one of the nearest subway reservoirs. These subway reservoirs by means of heat from electric boilers convert the ice to liquid form and then this water is transported through subway pipes to a large main supply tank where the water is filtered to make it consumable by humans. Before this water is consumed by the astronauts, researchers perform a chemical study to verify that it is suitable for drinking by the camp members.

Once the preparations for a trip to the moon begin, a selection of fast-growing seeds is made from earth and transported to the lunar camp, where a group of experts are in charge of having this automated greenhouse area in perfect condition to have healthy crops. Among the seeds taken to the moon are seeds of tomatoes, potatoes, lettuce, cabbage, wheat, peppers, radishes, rice, potatoes, bananas, avocado, chontaduro among others, the idea is to plant and experiment if we could have animals for consumption.

The electrical energy will be supplied thanks to a solar panel farm, by means of a battery bank, the idea is to store the energy and this system is in charge of producing alternating energy to the whole camp, including the living dome system, the cultivation cubicle, the water extraction system and it will be used to illuminate the whole camp and provide comfort and air conditioning to the astronauts who spend their research seasons on the moon. The other thing we could do to obtain energy could be by means of nuclear and thermal energy systems with the boiler that melts the ice, especially for those seasons when we have darkness.

One of the main ideas of the group was with what we talk about the regolith, it is necessary to make compaction systems to obtain most of the oxygen and make blocks for the structures and protections of the houses, in the design we also installed a place where we put many trees where they also help us to supply food and oxygen with algae, and other plants, on the other hand we think with the electrolysis will help to generate another part of energy and use oxygen and helium for the boiler that melts the frozen water.

Inside the lunar camp, protection against meteorite showers and cosmic rays must be guaranteed for the astronauts and their equipment, so all the domes, spacesuits and rovers are protected on top by special fibers that make a layer of protection very similar to those used in bulletproof vests, as well as glass, suits and equipment will be covered with UV protectors, temperature protection systems inside and outside the equipment with reflection of solar, gamma, alpha and beta rays.

Describe a day on the Moon for one of your Moon Camp astronauts

I get up and climb to the second floor and rehydrate a dehydrated food, since dehydrating it makes it take up less space and avoids the development of microbes. I drink a juice, which comes in powder form and is hydrated just like the food.
In one room the oxygen level is dropping and the lock is activated which seals that room so it’s time to see what’s going on from outside, first I check if the sensor is what’s broken, if it’s not I go to the airlock, put on my spacesuit and look for the problem.
There are no cracks because the walls of the station are very thick, actually the problem is that the cables that convert carbon dioxide into oxygen are clogged.
After that I go to exercise for 2 hours because in space you have to do a lot of exercise I put on the harness which is necessary because the gravity of the moon is almost 9 times less than on earth then I turn around and water the plants and took their data.
and precisely today is harvest day so I pick them up and the ones that were damaged I take them to the bioreactor so they are not wasted I investigate why those plants were damaged and I fix it apparently the water was badly distilled so I go and repair the water filter which was also clogged so apparently some moon dust was getting in through the airlock so I seal it and now to what I am supposed to have been doing I grow some kind of plant created in the lab with some specific traits and check how viable it is.
then all the team finished so now it would be time to have fun but today is message day as messages came in from the astronauts’ families along with some relevant news.
when I heard all the messages it’s time to go to sleep so I go to the bedroom and lay down on the bed and go to sleep.
