Moon Camp Pioneers Gallery 2020-2021

In Moon Camp Pioneers each team’s mission is to 3D design a complete Moon Camp using Fusion 360. They also have to explain how they will use local resources, protect astronauts from the dangerous of space and describe the living and working facilities.

Project description

The overall appearance of the lunar camp is like a five-pointed star, which is interconnected and very stable. In its five corners, are the rest area, food culture area, resource collection area, communication area; In the middle part of the star is divided into two levels, the upper for the energy control area, the lower for the emergency shelter area. For safety reasons, the emergency refuge zone was built underground on the moon, where essential supplies such as food and water were also stored, and the zones were connected to each other, greatly reducing the distance between them.

Where do you want to build your Moon Camp?

In the lunar polar region, the lunar polar region is about 70 to 80 percent of the time in the sun, can get enough solar energy to provide energy for the camp, there are also a lot of water ice at the lunar poles, can provide sufficient water.

How do you plan to build your Moon Camp? Describe the techniques and materials you would use.

We will use the ceramic material formed by heating the lunar soil in a high-temperature electric furnace as the supporting structure. The lunar soil will be heated to a molten state for sealing. The internal structure will be planned to use 3D printing technology.

The environment on the Moon is very dangerous for the astronauts. Explain how your Moon Camp will protect them.

The outer surface of the lunar camp is protected against radiation by lunar soil, and the interior is wrapped with multi-layer heat-insulation, wear-resisting, compressed-resisting composite material made of high-tech. Inside, the temperature, humidity and air pressure are adjusted by computer. Oxygen is produced through the energy zone and is delivered through the ventilation system to all areas. When faced with an emergency, you can also hide in the emergency refuge area to avoid disasters and dangers. If the danger period is longer, you can consider entering the hibernation cabin for hibernation.

Explain how your Moon Camp will provide the astronauts with:
Water
Food
Electricity
Air

Water: heated lunar soil, which contains silicon and metal oxides, with an average mass fraction of about 43% oxygen. Theoretically, heating the lunar soil to more than 900 degrees Celsius would allow hydrogen or carbon to strip oxygen from minerals and combine with hydrogen to form water. Water could also be obtained by collecting lunar ice in permanently Shadowed pits, cutting it with a laser, and heating it with a rover.

Food: Begin by eating earth processed foods, and later by growing kale vegetables, kale grows well in confined Spaces and contains the most easily degradable nutrients in storage. Biotechnology was used to cultivate chlorella with high protein content.

Power: in power, we mainly use solar panels for solar power generation. It also uses the heat generated by burning hydrogen, which is produced by electrolysis of water.

Air: As mentioned above, oxygen can be obtained partly by heating the lunar soil and partly by breaking down water

Explain what would be the main purpose of your Moon Camp (for example: commercial, scientific, and/or tourist purposes).

Our current lunar camp is mainly used for scientific research, to study the use of resources on the moon, to study the biological ecosystem suitable for long-term stability, and to study the problems of human migration to the moon today.

Describe a day on the Moon for your Moon Camp astronaut crew.

After waking up in the morning, the astronauts did simple physical exercises. After eating breakfast, they entered the energy control room to check the operation of the lunar camp. After checking that nothing was wrong, they entered the earth communication area to communicate with the earth personnel, understand the situation and determine the mission of the day. After the astronauts learned to collect the lunar resources, they entered the resource collection area and drove the resource collection vehicle to collect the lunar resources. And then back to the moon camp and into the research area.
