Moon Camp Pioneers Gallery 2020-2021

In Moon Camp Pioneers each team’s mission is to 3D design a complete Moon Camp using Fusion 360. They also have to explain how they will use local resources, protect astronauts from the dangerous of space and describe the living and working facilities.

Project description

The lunar camp mainly provides a place for astronauts to live normally and conduct experiments on the moon, which is more conducive to the astronauts to collect experimental samples and conduct experiments directly on the moon. It reduces the time and cost of traveling back and forth between the earth and the moon.
The Moon Camp consists of a growing area, a rest area and a multi-purpose area.The multi-purpose area includes entertainment area, experimental area, dining area and fitness area, etc. The rest area includes rooms for the astronauts, televisions for video calls with family members on Earth, and so on. The planting area is used to grow some vegetables. In addition, the planting area is located in the greenhouse, which ensures the temperature required by the plants

Where do you want to build your Moon Camp?

Our lunar camp is planned to be built in suitable craters or open areas at the poles of the moon.
Because there is a large amount of underground water in the two poles, it can solve the problem of long-term water consumption for astronauts. Moreover, the construction of the crater in the crater saves the time and expense of digging the foundation, and does not need too much civil engineering work, so the project can be carried out directly in the crater.
The open area avoids the obstacles of the surrounding craters, and the ground is flat, which can reduce the difficulty of the project.
The poles are in polar daylight and can make full use of solar energy resources.

How do you plan to build your Moon Camp? Describe the techniques and materials you would use.

All the materials used in the construction will be mined from the moon, then processed and transformed into building materials that we can use. Because of the poor consolidation of lunar soil, direct sintering technology will be used. Laser cutting is used. The building components can be made by mould or 3D printing. Material: soil, rock, etc.

The environment on the Moon is very dangerous for the astronauts. Explain how your Moon Camp will protect them.

With dome structure, dome material has the characteristics of low weight, high strength and low radiation, which can greatly reduce the radiation damage caused by cosmic garbage, meteorite and the sun. In addition, the camp can automatically adjust the indoor temperature to prevent the astronauts from discomfort due to temperature problems.

Explain how your Moon Camp will provide the astronauts with:
Water
Food
Electricity
Air

In the early days of the moon landings, water was transported by rocket from the earth. In the later stage, groundwater can be mined at the poles of the moon, and the liquid water produced by the temperature difference between day and night can be processed, which can be used for astronauts’ domestic water and agricultural and industrial water.

In the early stage, food was obtained from the earth, and then plants and livestock were planted on the moon to meet the food needs.
In later stages, soil brought from the earth is used to grow food.During the day, sunlight is used to photosynthesize plants, and at night, stored electricity is used to generate electricity and light is used to photosynthesize plants.

The camp is powered by solar and hydrogen energy.
Solar energy can be fully utilized on the moon, and the raw materials for making solar panels: Si,Mg,Al,Ca and so on are enough on the moon.
Hydrogen energy is obtained by electrolysis of water and by some chemical reactions.

The air will be oxygenated by electrolysis of molten oxides and by photosynthesis of plants.
On the moon with a large number of oxides, such as: aluminum oxide, sodium oxide, etc., can be electrolytic melting way to get metal and oxygen, and the oxygen collected for use.

Explain what would be the main purpose of your Moon Camp (for example: commercial, scientific, and/or tourist purposes).

Our lunar camp is mainly for scientific research. Because the human understanding of the moon is not comprehensive enough, the early understanding can only rely on the lunar rover to sample and then transport back to the earth. The lunar camp provides a favorable research environment for scientists to live on the moon for a long time.

Describe a day on the Moon for your Moon Camp astronaut crew.

Astronauts coming out of the warm and comfortable capsule in the morning, to meet the first ray of sunshine in the morning, while it can experience four times a day, the moon, but its feet full begins to accept the first ray of sunshine, a day after the astronauts can move into the room, there are a variety of sports equipment, but the astronauts must be careful not to jump too high, to know the moon’s gravity is only one 6 of the earth, which means one can dance on the moon more than 1 meter 8, think about how terrible, astronauts can not too much effort for a variety of aerobic exercise, to know the health is very important for the astronauts.

Workout in the dining room to eat various food brought from earth, in the morning can do a hard inside the planting base planted vegetables, food, to know the machinery and equipment in the moon environment is very easy to damage, so the most important meal of the day or to carefully check the operation condition of various equipment, ensure the normal running of our moon base.

In addition, our astronauts also have to carry out various scientific research activities outside the lunar capsule. After all, the original purpose of the construction of our lunar base is to carry out scientific research. In the afternoon, our astronauts will drive a lunar rover to the surrounding lunar base to carry out lunar soil and lunar mineral resources exploration work.

Finally at night our astronauts can take a bath in the moon capsule, and then entertainment for a while can enter the sweet dream land.
